Spartan Spotlight
August 2021
Welcome Back!
I hope everyone has had a wonderful summer. As we turn the calendar to August, the start of school is just around the corner. While this is always an exciting time of year, this year will be even more so for me. I have the incredibly humbling opportunity to serve the Northside community in the role of Building Principal at Fargo North High School. What creates that excitement is the knowledge of what incredible Students, Parents, Teachers and Staff we have here at Fargo North. It truly is a special place and I look forward to a great year as we all rally around one another to provide the best educational experience we can for ALL our students.
The first day of school will be Wednesday August 25th, but there are many athletic
activities getting started prior to that in August, as well as freshmen orientation and
upperclassmen registration. Freshmen and their parent/guardian were mailed a letter in mid-July with an assigned date and time to come. Dates include Wednesday, August 11th, Thursday, August 12th or Monday, August 16th. If you didn’t receive a letter or misplaced it, please contact Nikki in our Counseling & Career Center at 701-446-2412. All
upperclassmen, (sophomores, juniors, seniors), will be expected to pick up their class schedule, personal learning device (PLD) and have their picture taken on Tuesday,
August 17th between 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. More information on all of these events can be found in this newsletter.
All Parents/Guardians are also asked to complete their student’s annual registration forms and make necessary fee payments online before the orientation/registration dates listed above. These steps can be accessed via the Parent/Guardian’s PowerSchool account.
If there is anything the past year and a half has taught us it is that there will assuredly be challenges thrown our way. However, I believe we can overcome these challenges if we (School Staff, Parents/Guardians and Students) work alongside one another and remain focused on our shared goal. We strive to have each student becomes a Choice Ready
Graduate who is prepared to be successful in whatever next step they choose to take. In order to best make that a reality, I would encourage all Parents/Guardians to have a
conversation with your student(s) as they get ready to start the year and to highlight the importance of:
- Attending school daily, on time, and ready to learn
- Trying things that may seem difficult. That is how we grow
- Communicating with you and school staff if there are any additional supports that may be needed
The August newsletter is the only newsletter you will receive through the United States Postal Service. All future newsletters will be sent electronically in an email attachment.
I hope everyone enjoys the remaining days of summer. The entire FNH Staff looks forward to welcoming all of our students back to Fargo North for the coming school year.
Sincerely,
Travis Christensen
Principal

Immunization Update: 11th & 12th Graders
For the school year 2021-2022, a second dose of meningococcal conjugate vaccine (MCV4) is required for students entering eleventh or twelfth grade. Students will need proof of two doses of MCV4 before returning to school in the fall.
Ideally, children should receive one dose of MCV4 when they are eleven to twelve years old and a booster dose on or after their sixteenth birthday. Please schedule with your child’s health care provider or your local public health. Please have your child receive this booster prior to the start of the school year. Also, remember to bring in the documentation of the immunization date to the school.
Medical/School Nurse Information
Students in grades 9-12 can turn in their medical form(s) to the main office. These forms can be found online, you will need to download them to complete and have your student’s physician sign. Remember you will need to have them turned in to the school nurse by the first day of school if medication is to be given. School District Policy dictates that a form must be completed for any student who takes medication during school hours. The nurse will be available for questions on Monday, August 16 and Tuesday, August 17 hours may vary from registration.
If the medication is to be administered by the school nurse, the “Medication Administration” form (6720-A) must be completed. If a student wishes to administer and carry their medication with them, a “Self-Administration” form (6720-F) must be filled out. These include prescription meds and over the counter meds such as Tylenol and Advil. All medications brought in must be in the original medicine container.
The “Emergency Care Plan” form(s) (6720 E1, E2, E3 or G) must be filled out for anyone who has a condition which may require more than normal first aid (asthma, diabetes, seizures, allergies, migraines, etc.). This form must be signed by both parent and physician.
The forms can be found by going to www.fargo.k12.nd.us, click on Registration and then click Medication Forms or clicking Form AF6720C.
Fall Practice & Special Meeting Dates
Below are the startup dates for our fall activities, as set by the North Dakota High School Activities Association (NDHSAA). In addition, we have listed any special meetings scheduled by a coach. Please call or email the coach with any questions or concerns you may have.
Physical & Concussion Forms
Prior to participating in NDHSAA sanctioned athletic activities (including practice), the student must have on file with the school a current NDHSAA approved physical, dated April 15, 2021 or later and concussion form. The physical forms are available for download from the NDHSAA website.
When completing your student’s online registration there will be a question asked if your student is participating in a sport. If yes, you will be directed to the required online concussion and HIPPA forms to sign electronically.
Paper copies will not be accepted.
Co-Curricular Meetings
Freshman students and students new to co-curricular activities (Athletics, Music, Drama, Speech, Debate, Student Congress, DECA, FBLA, Skills USA) are required to attend a Co-Curricular meeting with a parent/guardian prior to being eligible for competition. Dates, times and locations are listed below. North High students should make every effort to attend the meeting held at North High on August 9 at 7:00 p.m. in the theater.
Upperclassmen (grades 10-12) planning on participating in co-curricular activities are required to complete an online parent meeting with their parent/guardian prior to competition. This has been incorporated into the PowerSchool registration process for each student. When you register your student for the fall you will be directed to view the online co-curricular meeting at the same time.
If students/parents have any questions they should refer to the Student Activitiy Handbook or contact their building Activity Coordinator.
Fee Waivers
If a student is unable to participate in an activity requiring a fee, waivers or other resources are often available to assist. The typical guideline used for eligibility is qualifying for free or reduced lunch. Students are encouraged to visit with their counselor if they may qualify or need any assistance.

Privacy Rights (FERPA)
The Fargo Public School District extends official notification of their commitment to the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) which affords parents and students over 18 years of age (“eligible student”) certain rights with respect to the student’s education records. These rights are outlined below.
The right to inspect and review the student’s education records within 45 days of the day the District receives a request for access. Parents or eligible student should submit to the school principal (or appropriate school official) a written request that identifies the record(s) they wish to inspect. The principal will make arrangements for access and notify the parent or eligible student of the time and place where the records may be inspected.
The right to request the amendment of the student’s education records that the parent or eligible student believes are inaccurate or misleading. Parents or eligible students may ask the school district to amend a record that they believe is inaccurate or misleading. They should write the school principal, clearly identify the part of the record they want changed, and specify why it is inaccurate or misleading. If the District decides not to amend the record as requested by the parent or eligible student, the district will notify the parent or eligible student of the decision and advise them of their right to a hearing regarding the request for amendment. Additional information regarding the hearing procedures will be provided to the parent or student when notified of the right to a hearing.
The right to consent to disclosures of personally identifiable information contained in the student’s education records, except to the extent that FERPA authorizes disclosure without consent. One exception which permits disclosure without consent is disclosure to school officials with legitimate educational interests. A school official is a person employed by the District as an administrator, supervisor, instructor, or support staff member (including health or medical staff, persons who sit on the Emergency Threat Response Team, and law enforcement unit personnel); a person serving on the School Board; a person or company with whom the District has contracted to perform a special task such as an attorney, auditor, medical consultant, or therapist); or a parent or student serving on an official committee, such as a disciplinary or grievance committee, or assisting another school official in performing his or her tasks including serving on the Emergency Threat Response Team. A school official has a legitimate educational interest if the official needs to review an education record in order to fulfill his or her professional responsibility.
