The Loudoun County Public Schools Job for a Day (JFD) program is a career exploration activity providing an opportunity for eligible students to "shadow" an individual for a day at his or her workplace. The experience allows the student to observe the tasks and responsibilities necessary in a particular career cluster, field or specific job.
Ideally, participation in Job for a Day will enable students to:
- Foster career awareness
- Explore fields in which there is an interest or aptitude
- Increase awareness of business enterprises within the community
- Strengthen motivation and informed decision-making skills
Host Responsibilities:
- Assume supervisory responsibility for the student(s) during their time with you
- Provide student(s) any specific requirements for participation in advance (office location, work hours, dress code, lunch expectations, etc.)
- Engage with student(s) directly and answer questions related to your field
- Include student(s) in daily activities to provide an authentic experience
- Debrief with student(s) at completion of JFD experience
- Do not allow the student(s) to engage in any of the hazardous activities or occupations listed in the index of Hazardous Occupations or any other illegal activity
- Complete the Attendance Verification Form provided to you by the student(s) so they may return it to their school to confirm their participation
- Provide feedback about your experience as a host by completing the evaluation form to be sent in an email following the JFD date
Suggested Activities:
- Ask/allow student(s) to interview you or members of your team
- Enable student(s) to spend some time with a colleague whose position is the entry level or different level of your position
- Arrange a rotation of activities within your organization (if applicable)
- Provide student(s) the following information about your career and work site: Education, training, and/or apprenticeship requirements
- Occupational forecast for opportunities in your job/career/field
- Challenges related to the career
- Activities of a typical day "at the office"
- Allow student(s) to attend collaborative meetings or other activities that will help them learn about your team structure and how you interface with other employees
- Have a resource guide or other materials available for the student(s) to view in case you
- have an emergency or crisis that requires your attention
- Allow student(s) to assist in activities when appropriate to provide a "hands-on" experience
- Provide a tour of the facility to give students an idea of how the organization works
- Provide information on the job application process (what is expected, how to apply, etc.)
