MATHEWS e-News
We are 'All-In' this Together at Mathews!
There is a Texas meme out there asking why winter and summer are fighting for custody of Texas! What a crazy winter season we have been having this year! Fortunately, warmer days are not too far away and our rain will certainly contribute to a beautiful spring!
Beginning Monday, we are celebrating "Pack Healthy" week. Nutritious foods, water, sleep and moderate exercise truly are the first line of defense in staying healthy! Each day next week is assigned a specific color. We invite students to bring a fruit or vegetable of that color to enjoy as a snack or a part of their lunch.
We are looking forward to our Mathews Multicultural Family Night this Thursday, February 27. As we celebrate our different cultures we invite families to enjoy celebrating being a citizen of our great country or honoring the fact that Texas was once itself a nation by wearing red, white, and blue. Our school, our state, our country are richly diverse and we all can celebrate.
The evening is from 6:00-7:30 and we hope you will join us for this special evening. More information below.
Friday, February 28 is Character Dress-Up day at Mathews. We invite our Mavs to dress up as a favorite character from a favorite book. This is our 'jump-start' to Read Across America Day on Monday, March 2.
Looking forward to Monday!

Travel the World in 90 Minutes THIS THURSDAY!
Around the world in one night. One school, many cultures! As Americans we celebrate the rich and diverse cultures that are part of what makes America great.
Cultural Heritage is an expression of the ways of living developed by a community and passed on from generation to generation, including customs, practices, places, objects, artistic expressions and values.
Join us as we celebrate a night of learning and celebration on Thursday, February 27 from 6:00-7:30. Interested in sharing your family's heritage? Sign-Up for a table by Tuesday, February 25.
Families will be able to begin setting up their displays in the gym beginning at 5:00 p.m.
We invite everyone to join in the celebration of this evening in dress up in clothing of their heritage or of course, in red, white, and blue as we celebrate all being citizens of our great nation. And of course, if you celebrate that Texas was once a nation, feel free to celebrate Texas!

District Health Update
As of February 7, 2020
The health and safety of our students, families and staff are a top priority in Plano ISD. We are operating at a heightened awareness regarding the 2019 novel coronavirus. In our continued efforts to assess risks and keep you informed, Plano ISD wants you to know that we are in contact daily with Collin County Health Services and follow the advice and recommendations from relevant local, state and federal health authorities regarding necessary precautions and protocols. Many of the steps we are already taking during flu season are applicable precautions for novel coronavirus, including encouraging proper hand washing techniques and deep cleaning schools and facilities in high touch areas as needed.
Plano ISD encourages parents and students to remain informed by following our official Plano ISD communications at https://www.pisd.edu/healthupdate and by visiting the Centers for Disease Control website at www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/index.html.
Collin County Health Services provided an update this week explaining the following travel guidelines:
· Travelers entering the U.S. from Hubei Province:
o Travelers who are symptomatic will be subject to immediate quarantine and testing.
o Travelers who are not symptomatic will be quarantined and monitored.
o None of these travelers will be sent home before the end of the quarantine period.
· Travelers entering the U.S. from elsewhere in mainland China:
o Travelers who are symptomatic will observe immediate isolation and testing.
o Travelers who are not symptomatic will be sent home with instructions to monitor symptoms and self-quarantine for 14 days.
o The self-quarantine protocol is recommended for travelers only, as their family members are not considered at risk.
o Plano ISD encourages our families who may be observing a self-quarantine to reach out to Collin County Health Services or to contact your school nurse so that you can be connected to appropriate health resources.
We are approaching this situation with an abundance of care and caution, and want to provide you with current information as we receive it. Plano ISD staff will continue to closely monitor this rapidly evolving situation. Children with symptoms of the flu or a flu-like illness should not be sent to school. We will inform our community as we receive updates, information and resources. If you have further questions regarding coronavirus or other communicable illnesses, please contact your school nurse, or the Plano ISD Health Services Department at 469-752-5991.
Dates to Remember
2020: Here We Go! Changes and updates will certainly occur. We promise to keep this updated to keep you informed.
