Classroom Highlight: Shared Reading
This year, through our continued partnership with the The Teachers College of Columbia University, our focus is on curriculum and instruction in the area of Shared Reading. We are confident that this continued professional development will be supportive of our young readers.
There are numerous benefits for young readers. First and foremost, it allows students to actively participate in reading. In addition, students practice using illustrations to construct meaning, increase and develop new vocabulary, discover and implement reading strategies, understand concepts of the printed word, use structural and visual cues for comprehension, and recognize letters and sounds in the context of words in the story. These are just a few benefits of this important component of balanced literacy.
We are confident that this work will support students in building a strong foundation in early literacy skills.
