Messages from the Office...
Winter is Here...
Students need to be dressed and ready to play outside! The morning and afternoon activity breaks are 25 minutes each. The actual time that the children are really outside depends on how quickly they are able to bundle up! They look forward to this time of socializing and playing in this wonderful fresh snow. Good boots, mittens and a hat—added to ski pants and parka will make all the difference between a child enjoying the outdoors or tolerating it.
The following guideline will be used for deciding when indoor recess should occur:
- -30 Celsius (with wind chill) - indoors for all recess
- -25 to -30 degrees Celsius (with a wind chill) partial recess indoors
In the case of multiple indoor recesses due to cold weather, teachers may choose to take their class outside for a 5 - 10 minute break if needed. At these times, the class will be very closely supervised.

Recreation Opportunities for Children (ROC)
Southwood has recently invited each student to share what activities they would like to have a chance to do at school. This is exactly what we do with each ROC family in their home. Our interests help us understand what we value and need (which change a lot throughout our lives!). Knowing what helps us feel better after a tough day or week can be extremely valuable in bouncing back to our more confident selves. Having a parent or teacher to help kids wade through these feelings is huge. Together, we can really help.
If you would like to help ROC families, we regularly need equipment such as craft supplies, sports equipment, helmets, scooters, baking/decorating items, keyboards, fuel cards, swim passes, etc. Any monetary donations of $20 or more will receive a tax deductible receipt.
On behalf of our ROC families, THANK YOU!

News from Mrs. Martin...
Recently, a team of teachers from our school received training from the Treaty Relations Commission of Manitoba (TRCM). These ideas and materials have been shared with staff, and will be explored in their classrooms throughout the year. The big ideas Southwood students will be learning about are:
Treaties and why they are important to us today
Relationships around the treaties
History surrounding the treaties
Character education through an Indigenous perspective
We're looking forward to educating students and parents around treaty education and the history of the land.
