Unami United
December 3, 2016
Dear Unami Parents, Guardians & Students,
Our student council took over the planning our our school-wide assembly and did a fantastic job of recognizing the many talents of our student body. Teams of teachers planned a variety of activities to build cohesiveness and to kick-off the holiday season.
Our National Junior Honor Society in partnership with 7th Grade Team Granite and Unami Staff collected food items for our annual Thanksgiving Baskets for our Unami community. This year 21 families received a turkey with all the fixings for their holiday meal. Our NJHS students also lent their assistance to our annual American Red Cross blood drive.
We are looking forward to a busy December, which will include our holiday concerts. Be sure to mark your calendars.
Unami United,
Mrs. Lang
Principal

TEAM GRANITE: PUMPKIN OLYMPICS
On Tuesday, November 22, Team Granite stole a little bit of time to attend to the social and emotional development of our students. The team focused on relationships and team building, although they did have academic connections. Around 120 students participated in our first ever Pumpkin Olympics.
The day began with a hot breakfast cooked by the teachers. Students enjoyed pancakes, sausages, yogurt and granola, and juices. One person stated, “It smells like Saturday morning breakfast.” While breakfast was cooking, students created team headbands with their team name on it. After enjoying breakfast students rotated through six different competition stations.
All in all, it was an excellent and fun filled morning. We had the opportunity to develop as a team, while combining aspects of the fall harvest, our studies of ancient Greece, and community outreach. Far more important for the team teachers, it was an opportunity for us to demonstrate how thankful we are for our students by cooking and serving a them a meal. We have enjoyed working with them thus far and want them to know we appreciate them! ...Team Granite Teachers

CB STUDENTS COLLABORATE IN OUR VERY OWN MODEL CONGRESS
On Friday, December 2nd, 11 Unami students went to CB West to work with representatives from each of the middle schools and high schools to simulate the work of the United States Congress. Collaborating in 3 different committees – the Armed Services Committee, Education and the Workplace Committee, and the Committee of Ways and Means – student representatives developed and presented bills to their peers and discussed the merits and limits of each bill. Ultimately, the students were able to work on reforming the tax code, improving the educational environment, and determining America’s role in international affairs. Students worked professionally and had a great time.
