Welcome to 2023-24 School Year (Edition 8.15.23)
Message from Mr. Greer
I am extremely excited for another new year at Harriet Tubman Middle School! This will be the second year I have the honor of serving as the principal of HTMS and I cannot think of anywhere else I would rather be in community. I look forward to being part of our continued growth, and most importantly, to working with our kind, brilliant and joyus students, staff and community.
Now in the 6th year after re-opening Harriet Tubman MS, we are gearing up for the best school year yet! After celebrating the promotion of our eighth graders in June, we are so excited to see our students continue to establish their individual paths as we prepare for an academically rigorous school year with a positive school community.
The continued call to action of high expectations for our students and staff is what it means to be part of the Legend community. You can be assured that HTMS will approach this year as we did last year, collaboratively and together!
Our first day of school for 6th graders is Tuesday August 29th. All three grade levels will come together on Wednesday, August 30th, 2023. Below contains all of the information your student needs in order to be ready for school.
Important and yearly reminders for our parents and students: While teachers prepare engaging and challenging learning opportunities for our students, your student will not benefit from those opportunities if they are tardy or absent. It is vitally important that your student come to school on time and be prepared to learn each day to the best of their abilities. If this is of concern, please reach out so we can try to support both you and your student.
We had a number of highly qualified candidates this summer and believe our newest staff members will help us build on all of the work we collaborated on last year as well as the vision we continue to establish together for HTMS.
As you did for myself and several others last year, please join me in welcoming the newest Legends to our staff:
- School Climate Specialist: Margarett Peoples
- 6-12 MTSS Specialist: Remy Jewell
- Counselor: Elise Newhouse
- ELA .5, 6th Grade: Claire Garrott
- Math 6th Grade: Courtney Odom
- SpEd Learning Center: Tanya Baley
- Physical Education: Rashard Boston
- Drama: Currently Vacant
To provide clarity on the positions:
- We added a second SCS position to go along with Mr. Stone for the 2023-2024 school year
- HTMS in collaboration with Jefferson HS will be working to establish a 6-12 vision
- Filled the vacant second counselor position
- Mr. Morris is moving to .5 this year, creating another .5 ELA position
- Ms. Daniel (Werts) moved on to Cesar Chavez School. Please congratulate her on her next step if/when you find a moment!
- Mr. Rodriguez retired during the summer. We are more than excited for him and his wife as they take this next step together.
- Curtis Williams will be moving into the Health classroom, creating an opening in PE
- Ms. Barbour moved to New York with her fiancée and we wish them the best of luck!

6th Grade First Day of School, August 29
Hello 6th Grade Families!
We are very excited that your child will be attending Harriet Tubman Middle School, and we look forward to seeing them on their first day of school, August 29. This jump start to the school year is a 6th Grade Orientation Day designed specifically for our newest legendary students, 6th grade ONLY! Our WEB Program will help get your 6th grader off to a great start!
Principal Greer will host "Coffee and Conversation" at 9:15am in the library for 6th Grade families on August 29. All 6th grade families are welcome to attend.
WHAT IS WEB? WEB is a nationwide program designed to welcome and support 6th graders by connecting them with WEB Leaders, who are positive, responsible, hand-selected 8th graders. Your student’s WEB Leaders will help them feel more comfortable as well as help them achieve success in their first year of middle school. Doesn’t that sound great? It is!
