Best Practices in Reading & Writing

The morning session will address best practices research and reading comprehension instruction. The presenter will combine a number of interactive activities including a model lesson, a collaborative group activity called “block party” and a video of a 4th grade comprehension lesson designed to support participants’ thinking, reflections and understandings of the latest research and implications
for comprehension instruction.
The afternoon will be devoted to best practices in writing instruction. During this session, participants will experience a writing lesson designed to support writers and build a sense of classroom writing community. Participants also have the opportunity to observe writing instruction in a first grade classroom and reflect on the implications of this workshop approach for all classrooms, K-5. The session concludes with a focus on writing conferences. Participants view several writing conferences and reflect on the purpose and power of these one to one writing conferences.
