St. Mary School "Make-A-Difference" Social Justice Club Is Awarded The Junior Justice Award
St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception School in Wooster has an enrollment of 125 students. We are a small but spiritually vibrant and joyful school community made up of K-7 (and sometimes 8th) students.
Under the direction of our Kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Kathleen Gorman, we started the Make-a-Difference Social Justice Club at St. Mary School in the Fall of 2017 with a small, but dedicated group of two students: sixth-graders, Max Miyashita and Daniel Boyer. We had originally opened the club up to students in grades 5-8, but we soon found out that those students have a lot of conflicting extracurricular activities, so after January, we opened it up to 4th graders as well. As a result, we increased our numbers by 50%! (Yes, that’s right. With the addition of Morgan Covey, our roster grew to a whopping three: 2 boys and one girl!)
We may have been small, but we were enthusiastic. At our first few meetings we talked about what social justice was and how we are called by Jesus and by Catholic Social Teaching to work on behalf of the poor and oppressed. After sharing our own particular areas of social concern, we decided to use the Corporal Works of Mercy as our roadmap and brainstormed ideas of how we could make our classmates more aware of social justice issues while challenging them to put their faith into action through worthwhile service projects and fundraisers. Students created skits, morning announcement commercials and posters to publicize our projects to the school and parish.

St. Mary School Information
Since 1865, people have known St. Mary School students by their actions. This is because throughout our history, we have focused on building student’s character, based on the values instilled by the Catholic Faith, and a foundation of academic excellence.
St. Mary School provides a welcoming environment where families have the freedom to celebrate the faith. In a world of need, responsibility matters and strength is needed to serve our communities. It is our mission to develop students who have the ability to be mentors and leaders in the world. We recognize that each student is a unique gift from God and we individualize instruction to help them reach their full potential. We strive to promote an atmosphere that encourages a love of learning and provides children with a foundation of faith to balance and guide them for the rest of their lives.
