Shout Outs
From a former student to Mrs. Lysobey
Hi Mrs. Lysobey,
I hope you've had a great school year so far. Mine's been alright--it feels super weird to be a senior, and I actually miss McMillen more than I thought I would.
Thinking back on high school, the first AP class I ever took still stands out to me as one of the most interesting and engaging of all of them. I remember walking in on the first day and being scared out of my mind, but by the end of the year, I didn't ever want to leave. I'm so grateful for what I learned in AP Human Geography and actually find myself thinking about the concepts regularly. It's so cool how a class can span so many different subjects--I've made connections to HGAP from three different history classes, Environmental Science, Government & Economics, and even Statistics. It really is everywhere!
I know it's been a while since I had you as a teacher, but you made HGAP very memorable to me, and it would mean a lot if you would write me a letter of recommendation for my college applications. I'd appreciate it a ton, but of course, it's totally up to you and I understand if you're busy.

I would like to give a huge shout out to Thomas Nguyen. Every time I have a problem with software or printers, he is so fast and kind in working to fix it. He has been such a huge help to me! Thanks, Thomas!
Words of the Week
1. Have we only given them one tool with which to work? This could be only one way to write, one way to annotate, or one way to take notes. If so, a better way is to provide several strategies or tools from which they learn to choose what is best for the task.
2. Are we providing our students many tools but no knowledge of how or when to use them? Obviously, as we dole out the tools, we need to be discussing the possible hows and the whens for each.
3. Do we provide tools for our students but never actually give them anything to build? Do we have them take notes when they don’t need to? Do we give study guides and review questions that can be answered without actually reading the entire text?
With some deliberate planning, we can become educators who equip our students with the right tools, teach them how and when to use them, and then give them reasons to dig into their toolboxes.
It’s almost the weekend!

Counselor on Duty
Words Matter
Let's be careful with our words
Avoid making comments such as:
"You should know this by now." For the student that is truly making an effort to master the material, this will make them feel worse. For a 14,15, or 16 year old, it can have a huge impact on self-efficacy.
"The other class did well with this. What's wrong with you guys?"It gets taken as an insult, not a motivator. Aim to make the students in front of you feel like they are the most important people in that teacher's world.
