A Message from Mr. Hoog
Hello BSE Families,
Congratulations to Mr. Anders and our Math Bowl participants for an excellent performance at the Math Bowl competition last night. Our kids were fantastic and did an awesome job of representing BSE!
We also want to thank Officer Shaun Williams, from the Fishers Police Department, for leading an information session regarding digital citizenship with our 4th grade students this week. Please read below for additional details.
Have a great weekend!
Mr. Hoog

Digital Citizenship
On February 20th, Officer Shaun Williams from the Fishers Police Department spoke with all BSE fourth graders about Digital Citizenship. This was a valuable opportunity for learning, discussion, and reflection as it was a powerful continuation of lessons and practices already shared with the students by the fourth grade teachers and Mrs. Kussy, the Library Media Specialist.
We invite you to continue these conversations with your children as digital citizenship is a part of everyone's lives, everywhere they are, and at every moment of the day. Included below are the various topics Officer Williams addressed with the students. Feel free to use this list as a guide as you talk as a family to ensure safety, healthy relationships, and stronger social and emotional health of everyone in your family and around you.
What is digital citizenship?
- It is making responsible and respectful choices online and offline.
- As individuals do we have a "fear of missing out"? How often are we checking social media for likes, comments, new postings? How much time is spent on social media? Why?
- How do we know the information we reshare on social media is actually true?
- Five things to look for:
- Look for unusual urls like .com.co
- Dissect the layout. How is it organized?
- Dig deeper. Who created it? Who supports it?
- Cross Check. Use fact checking sites.
- Try a reverse image search. Where else is the same image being used and in what ways?
Sharing & Privacy
- What privacy settings are being used? Privacy settings are there to protect and for sharing only with people one knows and trusts.
- Without privacy settings, pictures and videos are out there for anyone to view, find, and use.
- Think about what we tell our children.
- Don't talk to strangers.
- Don't get into a vehicle with someone you do not know.
- When children are online, are they talking to strangers? Are they part of online games with strangers? Are they posting videos and pictures for strangers to see?
Cyberbullying
- Advice from Officer Williams: Do not get online when you are angry.
- Girls are twice as likely to be involved in cyberbullying than boys.
"Location Services"
- Turn it off to stay safe and so your personal information is not shared.
- When it is on, predators can figure out where the photo was taken.
Webcams
- They can be hacked when turned on and, again, one's safety is at risk. Turn it off or cover it with tape.
As a BSE family, our vision is for all students to be safe, healthy, respected, and responsible. As adults, this is an opportunity for us to reflect on how we can be models in practicing safe and healthy choices when we are "plugged in" on our devices. Children watch and follow us. Let us together be Safe and Healthy Digital Citizens. If you need further assistance please contact our principal, Jeff Hoog.
