For Heaven's Sake
Our Lady Queen of Heaven School - January 2018
From the Principal's Desk
January has brought real winter weather to Southwest Louisiana this year. I do not remember winter being this cold since I left Rhode Island 15 years ago. School has been affected by the cold weather so there is much to do and makeup. We are blessed that our school day is longer than most and therefore, we do not have to make up any of the lost time. There is still time left in this winter to cause more trouble but we will just have to wait and see what the weather has in store for us.
Catholic Schools Week will be Sunday, January 28 – February 2, 2018. It is the annual celebration of Catholic Education. The theme is Catholic Schools: Learn. Serve. Lead. Succeed. During this week OLQHS will celebrate with various faithful and fun-filled activities. There will be an Open House, the annual 8th grade volleyball game, Alumni Mass, etc. Please plan on celebrating with us and showing appreciation to all the members of the community that help to make OLQHS an exceptional place to be.
Lent begins on February 14. Lent is a time to serve others, but it must also be a time of preparation and renewal of character. We need to take time this Lenten season to allow God to show us where we need to change and grow. God can give us the courage and conviction to put these changes in place. Change is difficult but with God’s help we can do it. As Jesus spent time in the desert praying, we need to also spend time praying so we can be the best we can be.
May you find joy in the love and hope of the Lord. God’s continued blessings as we journey together through this school year.
Joy in Christ,
JoAnn

The Art World
Don't forget--if you would like your child to have an Artsonia T-Shirt Day, you have one month (which is plenty of time) to order one. They can wear jeans with a T-Shirt from Artsonia with their own artwork on it (T-Shirts come in white and gray). The OLQH Art Department gets 20% of each sale.
We have so many new members of the Artsonia Hall of Fame this month. In Kindergarten we have Hudson Collins, Grayson Sheeley, Pippa Leitl, and Whitten Wilder. New First Grade members are Millie Tadlock, Chase Williams, and Ella Durio. Second Grade winners are Andrew Louviere, Colt Leger, Samuel Bebee, Ali Wiliams, Hudson Savant, and Eloise Thompson. In Third Grade we have Nacey Guillory, Campbell Louviere, Baylee Gabbard, and Hayden Richard. Our Fourth Grade winner is Cara Henry.
The last month in OLQH Art has been all about SNOW and MARDI GRAS!! Kindergarten drew snowmen and penguins, First Graders are drawing a picture on perspective with a snowman in the foreground and a house in the background (they are coloring with cray pas--oil pastels), some of the Third Graders learned how to properly make snowflakes. Fourth Graders made snowflakes as well.
For Mardi Gras, Kindergarteners were given a mask drawing with only the eyes, nostrils, and mouth and they had to create the designs and color. They are decorating the Fine Arts Building Hall. Second graders are making their own wearable masks complete with feathers and glitter. They will be worn to the Kindergarten Parade. Third Graders were given a blank mask and had to first draw an emotional facial expression (happy, sad, hysterical, angry, or surprised) and then add the decorations. They will also grace the hall in the Fine Arts Building. Fourth Graders and Seventh Graders are making large wearable Mardi Gras Masks (based on the way one cuts out a snowflake). They too, will be worn to the Kindergarten Mardi Gras Parade. Seventh Graders also created Optical Illusions.
For those parents who have not signed up on Artsonia (particularly Kindergarten Parents), please do. It is a FREE online Art Museum so that your child and all their friends and family can participate in the Art Program at OLQH. Please sign up.
And as usual, we are busy being creative, making messes, and having fun!

asbestos statement
Each year parents must be informed that the school has complied with all national standards regarding asbestos on campus. Certain vinyl floors and the panels that are below the quad windows will have to be handled appropriately if ever replaced. Our report indicates that existing asbestos is in good condition and we have the highest rating given. You are welcome to examine the asbestos file in the office if desired.
