Muffins in the Morning
I was able to meet informally with some parents of our high school students while enjoying muffins and coffee. That combo of food and caffeine helped make Monday morning a bit more bearable! In those 45-50 minutes, I was able to listen to the parents share some of the positives on what we are doing to help their child be successful. There are definitely things to celebrate here, and the most important being what our teachers do every day to help our learners and to ensure the learner is accountable for his/her learning and achievement. I also took notes while I listened for some themes, and one of the biggest themes I gleaned was around developing a more thorough understanding of our standards based grading and reporting system. Something that was also affirmed in meeting this morning is that parents and guardians, too, hold academics to a very high regard, and we need to partner with one another to help increase our achievement of all learners across the board.
When I was first beginning in Marshall, I was told by some of the students that there is a perception that a '2' is 'good enough,' and I wondered what that really meant. The biggest challenge we face here is raising our level of academic achievement, and that involves elevating the status of academics where all our learners are motivated to achieve at high levels. On Thursday, November 29, when I was among the crowd awaiting the beginning of the first home girls' basketball game, I couldn't help but feel an intense amount of energy and incredible sense of pride in our school. All these people came out to support our team, as it was the unveiling of the plaque for the 2018 Girls Basketball WIAA State Championship. I cried a bit from the joy, even though I was not a part of Marshall High School on its journey last winter to achieve such great heights. Anybody present, whether connected to the community or not would have undoubtedly felt the same excitement and invigorating sense of accomplishment had they been in that gymnasium then. The next day during morning announcements, I shared my curious wonder with the staff and the student body about how we could recreate that same excitement and energy for learning in each classroom everyday. What would that take? In my mind, it takes partnerships with not only our teachers, but our learners themselves, as well as our families.
I am looking forward to continuing to seek input from our parents and guardians and our entire community as we work on improving our learning environment for everyone. It was a fantastic way to get my blood moving and my brain going on a Monday morning.

Juuling at School?
As a staff, we spent some time discussing at a recent meeting what we have discovered at our school, reminders to keep an eye use of the bathroom passes for extended periods of time, and to report suspicious activity to Administration so we are able to investigate. Officer Joe Nickel also shared information with the staff about what Juul devices and pods look like, essentially a thumb drive for a computer, as well as the nicotine content equivalent of a 'pod' to a pack of cigarettes. Officer Joe is also presenting to students across all grade levels on varying topics, and the dangers of vaping and juuling is one common topic across these grade levels.
