HILL HAPPENINGS
#HillHasHeart Edition - June 2023
A Note from the Principal
Hello Hill Families,
The next four weeks have so many events celebrating a wonderful school year together!
Tomorrow, Wednesday, May 31st is our all school game day field trip to Atwood Stadium to watch the Flint City Bucks soccer game. Students should wear their Hill shirt (or Davison shirt) and can wear a hat and/or sunglasses. Please apply sunscreen to your child before school. It’s going to be a hot sunny day. If your child is bringing their own sack lunch, include their name on it and please be sure that everything is disposable. Students that chose a hot lunch will receive a Koegel hot dog, chips, sliced apples, carrots, rice crispy treat and milk. I’d encourage your child to also bring a disposable bottled water with their initials on the cap. We will leave Hill around 10:15, kindergarten will be back around 12:30 and Grades 1 - 4 will be back around 1:30. We will sit together as a school and all of our staff including our resource officer will be in attendance. We are looking forward to a wonderful time together!
On Thursday, June 1st we have our Annual Hill School picnic/dance from 5:00 -7:00 pm. We have over 400 RSVPS! Food will be served in our cafeteria and the rest of the activities will be outside. We have picnic tables, feel free to bring lawn chairs or blankets to sit on as well. There will be lawn games, playground, and dancing under the pavilion. It's just a great time to see one another and spend time together as a Hill School family.
Field Day is next week on Thursday, June 8th. Another fun-filled day and looks like we will have great weather too!
Our playground equipment has arrived. The installation will be completed tomorrow. Thank you for all of your support through the years to make this happen. Kids were really excited to see the extra equipment on the playground today!
This will be our final newsletter of the school year until we return in August. Please be sure to take note of important dates and happenings!
As always, if you have any questions, feel free to reach out to your child's teacher or our office! We are grateful for our Hill School families! I hope to see you all soon!
Most Sincerely,
Mrs. Burke, Ed.S.

Being grateful and appreciating the little things around you can change your mindset. Thoughts are powerful. Make them positive. Here are 5 Benefits of Gratitude Journaling (writing down your positive, thankful thoughts) that are going to make it worth taking a few minutes to add this to your daily routine
1. Improves mental health:
Multiple studies in the field of positive psychology have shown that gratitude journaling helps people to get rid of negative emotions. Greed. Envy. Regret. and Frustration are often expelled when people take the time to express their gratitude.
2. Increases happiness:
Further studies have shown that daily gratitude journaling has a large impact on increasing happiness and improving self-esteem
3. Helps you sleep better:
With a lower amount of negative emotions and great happiness and feelings of self-worth, many of the things that keep us up at night tossing and turning are gone, helping to improve sleep quality and quantity.
4. Improves relationships:
Journaling about your gratitude makes you more aware of what others do for you.
This often leads to improved expression of gratitude to others.
When you express gratitude, people want to be around you more because you make them feel good about themselves, regardless of whether you are grateful for someone holding opening the door or giving you a life-changing opportunity.
5. Gratitude increases resilience:
When you are grateful for the good things that have happened in your life, you also become more immune to negative reactions when the bad comes around. Gratitude gives you perspective and helps you realize that no matter how bad things are, “this too shall pass”.

Our testing is finally wrapped up and I’m thrilled to report that we had an extremely successful academic year at Hill Elementary. There were many changes to the day to day operations and teachers, support staff, and students were flexible with these adjustments. They were able to get the most out of their time with one another. All of this support showed in a glowing way during the assessment window.
Planning for next year’s academic instruction and interventions are already underway. Just like our students, we have learned what works and will adjust to make the most out of our instructional practices. We are looking forward to another successful year.
Beginning June 1st, we invite you to join in the “Read to a Million 2023 Summer Reading Challenge.” On or before June 1st, you will receive information from your child’s classroom teacher. It is easier than ever to join in the fun. The information coming home will have a code that you can scan on your phone to log student pages read. You can also go to https://bit.ly/R2M2023 to log pages.
I hope all of your families have a warm and restful summer. I look forward to continuing to serve your children in the upcoming school year.
Music Notes from Mrs. DuPrey
We have been busy in the music room! In 1st and 2nd grade we have finished all of our assessments for the end of the year, and are spending our last days together having fun with our favorite activities.
In 3rd grade students will be working with recorders until the end of the year. I love watching their faces light up when they pass the song. It is so fun to see them work so diligently on something and then to see their hard work pay off as they get better and better!
In 4th grade, students are now working in class to practice for their final ukulele project. The kids have chosen a song and will sing and play that song for their final grade in ukulele. Everyone is doing a wonderful job with this and I am excited to hear their performances.
In Kindergarten we have been working hard on our end of the year assessments. Students are using their singing voices, improvising patterns in duple meter, and keeping the steady beat on a drum. We are also working on their end of the year celebration songs! They are excited to perform in the gym and share what they want to be when they grow up.

Library News
As we approach the end of the school year, below are a few important upcoming dates:
· The week of May 29 is the LAST week to check-out library books.
· ALL library books need to be returned by Thursday, June 8. NOTE: All books have to be accounted for, or a fine will be assessed to your child's school account.
These past few weeks in the library we have covered topics including teamwork, cooperation, and following your dreams. We will finish the school year viewing the movie, “The Boxcar Children”. This is a timeless movie that students enjoy year-after-year.
Davison students will be participating in the county-wide Read to a Million Challenge again this summer. This challenge runs from June 1st – August 31st. Information will be coming out in the next couple of weeks.
Enjoy your summer and remember to read with your child. Reading with your child is a great way to show them how important reading is, and helps them use their imagination to explore people, places and events.
It has been a joy having your child/children in library this year. Have a great summer!
Happy Reading!
