Myers-Wilkins Wolf Tracks
November 2016 - Issue 3
We are entering the holiday season. It's that time of the year where the weather is chilly, the leaves have turned color and fallen off the trees and we want hot chocolate for comfort. This is always my favorite time of the year.
I want to thank you for a successful parent teacher conference. We had a great turn out of parents. Several families were also able to participate in the survey we gave in regards to our school.
We had a great family night in October. It was our Community Resource Fair. We had around 200 people attend. What a great night to get some delicious food and connect with community partnerships!
Just a reminder to send your student(s) with a labeled coat, hat, mitten/gloves. If you need support with this please contact Laura or Seiquayia at ext. 2501. Also remember to check the lost in found if your child has lost a piece of clothing.
After the October Parent Student Advisory Committee meeting , it was agreed upon to allow parents the option of walking their child up to class until 7:45 a.m. Parents are requested to be out of the building by 7:45 a.m. so teachers are ready to teach. If your child comes in after 7:45 a.m. they should check in to the office. They will be given a late pass and sent directly to class. Also a friendly reminder that teachers do need to be supervising during the arrival time. If you would like to speak with the classroom teacher please ensure to make an arrangement with the teacher before or after school. Thanks for your support in this matter!

When is my child considered tardy?
This is a reminder to the Myers-Wilkins students and families that your child is considered tardy if they arrive after 7:45. Please ensure to arrive before that time. If your child arrives after this time they need to stop by the office and get a tardy slip.
What happens if my child is sick?
- has a fever of 100 degrees or more (if this is the case your child should stay at home 24 hours after the fever is gone without the use of medicine)

Tips to for your family to stay healthy:
- cough or sneeze into your sleeve
- wash hands frequently
- Avoid sharing personal items, drinks, food or eating utensils
- Flu Shot
- Get sleep
What happens if my child has a bus issue?
A couple of our bus routes are having some behavior issues. Most of our buses do not have any other adult on the bus besides the driver and none of our busses have cameras. If a child gets a referral from the driver, the first will be a warning and a copy of the referral sent home. The second referral will result in a 3 to 5 day suspension off the bus, the third referral will be 5 or more day suspension off the bus and the 4th could mean suspension off the bus for the rest of the year depending on the severity of the referral. If your child rides the bus, please talk to them about bus behavior and the importance of reporting problems to the bus driver. If there are concerns about the bus, please call transportation (336-8970) or Voyageur Bus (724-1707).
How do I contact the school if I need to pick-up my child early?
We ask that your child(ren) stick to their regular schedule every day. If your child takes the bus home after school, we ask that they take the bus home every day. Only in an emergency situation should a change be made to your child’s after school routine. Students are only allowed to ride the bus they are assigned to. If alternative arrangements need to be made for after school pick-up a parent must contact the teacher in writing otherwise your child will go home their usual way. If a student will be picked up by someone other than the parent, a note must be sent to the teacher in advance. If you need to call the teacher to get a message to your child about a change, please call before 11:00.
What do I do if my child is absent?
.Parents are required to call the attendance line or main office when your child is sick or will not be in school. By not doing so, the absence will be “unexcused”. Every minute counts in you child's education! Attendance line is 218.336.8860 - Option 1
What is our PBIS focus for November?
November’s PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports) focus will be all about being grateful and thankful for all that we have in our lives. Staff will be working on short lessons with students and leading discussions that will help students to understand that we always, always, always have something to be thankful for. We will kick off our month of gratitude with an all-school assembly on Friday, November 4th at 1:30 p.m. We look forward to spending November with students and letting them know just how thankful we are for each and every one of them. Go Wolves!
Parent Student Advisory Council
Myers-Wilkins has a very active and inclusive parent group. The meetings will be held on the second Tuesday of each month. There will be a snack and childcare provided. Mark your calendars!!! Our second PSAC meeting will be on November 15th. We would like as many parents as possible to be a part of this group. We will have a set agenda. The PSAC meeting will be from 5:00-6:30 p.m. in the media center. If you are not able to come to the meeting we are looking for volunteers in our building. Please stop by the office or give us a call and we can connect you to help out and be active here at Myers-Wilkins. We look forward to seeing you there!
Myers-Wilkins Collaborative November Update
After-school programming
The fall semester of COMPASS is off to a great start and is quite busy with visitors! We are lucky to have 3 groups coming to work with our students. Senior nursing students from the College of St. Scholastica will be coming once a week to lead 1st-5th grade students in lessons focused on Social Emotional Learning. The 3rd grade will be having SNAP ED coming by to share info about healthy eating and cooking. And the 4th /5th graders are welcoming the Swenson College of Engineering to lead a STEM club twice a month. We are excited to work with all of these organizations and learn from the experts! In all, it should be a fun and diverse semester for COMPASS!
Terrific Tuesday and Thurzday Thrillz classes are in full swing. Instructors and kids are getting to know each other and diving right into fun and creative activities. Thanks to all families for getting your child involved in an enriching activity that compliments what is learned in the school day by providing an additional opportunity to be creative, provide a social outlet, learn a practical skill, and/or be physically active.
Our very own Kako's Choir will be performing at Duluth All Soul's Night, a family event that takes place Friday, November 4th at the Downtown Depot: 506 W. Michigan Street. There will be face-painting, music and dance performances, fire dancers, and a parade. The choir performs at 6:00.
