Objective Driven Lessons: What it is!
The book, Teaching Practices from American's Best Urban Schools, is a great resource for learning more about classroom best practices. Below are some best practices as we continue to focus on mastery and using daily learning objectives to drive our instruction and student work. Discuss these with your PLC to see how well your practices align with these effective practices.
Focusing on Mastery is:
- planning with a focus on increasing the likelihood students will understand the specific concept/skill by the end of the lesson.
- the teacher planning activities that are likely to help students understand the concept he/she wants them to learn within that class period
- the teacher designing questions that will help determine if students are progressing towards mastery.
- the teacher anticipating misconceptions and designs the lesson, activities, and examples to avoid the misconceptions
- the teacher constantly monitors and assesses to determine if students are making sense of the lesson and makes adjustments where needed.
- the teacher aiming to get students to thoroughly understand a concept of skill
- the teacher engaging students in learning activities that lead to better understand the objective.
