West Pine Middle
Ignite! Engage! Grow!
A Note from Mrs. Wiley
We have several ways our families can get involved at WPMS. On January 28th, our PTSO is sponsoring a SOUPER luncheon for our staff. Visit the PTSO section below for the link to sign up. The WPMS Athletic Booster Club is back up and running! Visit the athletics section for more information on how you can support.
We thank all of our families for supporting our canned food drive in December. Our students brought in 1354 canned food items for the West End United Methodist Church food pantry. Thanks to Mrs. Lagos and the FCA club for their leadership. I look forward to getting a pie in the face by one lucky student from the overall winning homeroom (Floyd)!
Take care. JW
This Week at WPMS
SOS
- West Pine Middle School will present a suicide prevention program to all students January 11th during ROAR. Presented annually in MCS secondary schools, Signs of Suicide (or SOS) encourages students to seek help if they are concerned about themselves or a friend. This is an evidence based program that provides universal suicide prevention to all students. According to the CDC, suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death for students between the ages 11-18. The program focuses on risk reduction, health promotion, and promotes learning and resiliency in all students so that peers can help each other. The program teaches students to ACT…Acknowledge that you are seeing signs of depression or suicide and that it’s serious; let your friend know that you Care about them; and to Tell a trusted adult. We will have extra counseling staff on campus to assist any students who need to speak to an adult. Visit www.sossignsofsuicide.org/parent for information on warning signs for youth suicide, to access useful resources, and to learn more about the key message all students will learn in class.
Late Work Deadline/End of Q2 and 1st Semester
- Any work assigned between December 13 - January 7 is due by January 12 for credit.
- The last day of quarter 2 and semester 1 is Friday, January 14th.
Sports
- Basketball: Home game vs East Lee is tentatively rescheduled for Wednesday, January 12. This is the final basketball game of the season. Admission is $4 for adults and $2 for students. Concessions will be available. Girls begin play at 4pm with the boys following. Parents should pick up their children no later than 6:15pm.
- Wrestling: The wrestling team will travel to Southern Middle School on Wednesday, January 12th to take on the Dragons.
- Join us January 13th at 6:30pm in the school's gymnasium for our orchestra department's winter concert. Hear beautiful music from all three grade levels.
Wildcat Athletics
- Girls Volleyball & Boys Soccer Tryout Sign Ups: If your child has signed up to try out for either girls volleyball or boys soccer, please verify that their PlanetHS accounts are updated. Please reach out to Mr. Willms if you need assistance with Planet HS. Tryouts for both sports will take place on January 19th, 20th and 21st. Coach Eury is the boys soccer coach. Coach Floyd and Coach Freeman are the girls volleyball coaches.
- Girls Volleyball Open Gym: On January 11th (not the 12th as originally scheduled) from 3-5pm, Coach Floyd and Coach Freeman are hosting a girls volleyball open gym session for those interested in conditioning in preparation for tryouts. Students must have a PlanetHS account completed with all updated documentation to be able to participate! On January 18th from 3-5pm, there will be another open gym session. Since this is a required teacher workday, this will be optional for students, with parents dropping off and picking up their child. Your child will need gym clothes, tennis shoes, knee pads, and water for each open gym session.
Middle School Athletic Eligibility (Academics & Attendance)
A student must meet the following requirements:
Academics
1. In grades six, seven and eight, the student must pass three out of four core classes each semester.
2. If an athlete is "academically eligible” or "academically ineligible” at the beginning of any semester, that status is retained throughout the full semester. This means that all Second Half of Winter & Spring Semester sports are dependent upon the prior Fall semester grades.
Attendance
Daily attendance is essential for student academic success and emotional well-being. If students are absent, please communicate with teachers for access to work through Canvas. If students come in tardy, they must arrive by 11:30am to be considered present for the day. Students who are absent may not practice after school, travel with the team on the activity bus to away games, or be able to play on game day.

School Information
Not Feeling Well...
- Students who are not feeling well are asked to stay home. Staying home when sick is essential to keeping infections out of school and preventing spread to others.
Cell Phones
- Students are reminded each morning during announcements to turn off their cell phones and place them in their book bags. If there is an emergency and your child needs to contact you, he/she is allowed to come to the office to call. Same goes for you. Please call the office and we will be sure to get the message to your child.
School Store
- Our school store is open each morning until the bell rings. The store offers everything from school supplies to Wildcat apparel.
Child Nutrition Update
- School meals are provided to all students free of charge this year. However, it is still important that families who qualify for this benefit complete a Free and Reduced Price Meal Application. This application has benefits beyond school meals, such as discounted fees on academic tests and exams, college applications, increased school funding to support all students and more. To have an application mailed to you, call the Child Nutrition Office at (910) 947-2342 or email cndirector@ncmcs.org.
Afternoon dismissal
- School dismisses at 3pm. 6th graders are picked up at the front of the school. 7th graders are picked up by the baseball field (enter at West Pine Elementary School). 8th graders are picked up in the back parking lot (staff parking area). Please note: once the 8th grade afternoon carline is at capacity, those cars will be asked to remain in the regular line until a staff member directs them to the back of the school.
- 8th grade cars are asked to use their right turn signal to alert the staff member on duty directing traffic that you are turning right.
- 6th/8th carline: All cars are asked to stay close to the curb in the bend near the split in the road so that the 8th grade cars have enough clearance to exit safely.
Late Arrivals
- Students arriving after 8am must sign in at the front office. A parent/guardian must accompany the student to the front door and ring bell for assistance.
Early Dismissals
- We understand that doctor/dental appointments and other appointments cannot be avoided. However, in order to protect the instructional time and limit class disruptions, no early dismissals will be allowed after 2:30pm. Students will not be called out of class early until the parent/guardian arrives to school. Any changes to your child's afternoon ride home must be shared with our office staff prior to 2:30pm.
Instructional Fees
- School fees are $40 (technology and instructional). There may be additional fees for encore classes. Those fees can be paid online, or your child can bring in to school and one of our staff members will receipt. Families may submit a request for waiver or reduction of fees form if they feel they cannot afford to pay these fees. This form is available through our bookkeeper, Ms. Campos.
Student Medication
- All medication, prescription and/or over-the-counter drugs that parents want given at school must have a physician order accompanying the medication to school. The Request for Medication Administration in School Form (Spanish) must be filled out in its entirety, on one sheet of paper with the front page being the physician order, and the back, the parent authorization. Medication of any type must be brought to school by the parent/guardian in the original container with the Request form Medication Administration at School completed by the physician and the parent/guardian.
