Happy Friday, Lil Steamer Families!
December 6, 2019
From the desk of: Principal Hoese
As the holiday season approaches, I am overwhelmed by the giving spirit of numerous families and groups in our community. Many, whose youngest children have graduated Fulton High School already, are still looking for opportunities to assist students and families in #SteamerNation.
I thought I would take this opportunity to reach out to all families in #SteamerNation. If you are in need of assistance, or are willing to assist a family in need this holiday season, please contact me directly through email at jhoese@riverbendschools.net -- I will work to pair families in need with others who are willing to assist. This process will remain completely confidential.
If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to let me know.
SRO Leitzen's Tip of the Week!
Be respectful even if you disagree with school staff -- rules are in place for safety.
From the Desk of: Counselor Mrs. Meumann
In early childhood, children begin to recognize that people can feel and think different things about the same situation. This skill is an important part of social perspective taking. Not assuming everyone feels just as they do or as they would in a situation helps children build empathy. We can help children to better understand empathy by giving them examples they can understand such as playing with a child who appears left out or sharing their toy with someone who doesn’t have many toys to play with.
5 Essentials Survey
The overall parent response rate is 6% from River Bend CUSD 2 for the 2020 Illinois Parent Survey. As a reminder, schools need 20% of their parents to respond in order to receive a report.
Here are the parent response rates for schools in River Bend CUSD 2:
Early Step Pre-School: 4%
Fulton High School: 4%
River Bend Middle School: 7%
Fulton Elem School: 8%
Please take a few moments to complete the 5 Essentials Survey if you have not done so.
A Trip to the Tree Farm
On December 3rd, Fulton Blended Preschool went on a field trip to Timber Lane Christmas Tree Farm on Garden Plain Road. The children got to see all the trees in the field, learn about the different kinds of trees that they sell, how they are displayed, and got to see the tree shaker and baler work. They also got to enjoy a snack, a cup of hot chocolate, and each child got to choose an ornament to take home and put on their own tree.
Timber Lane Christmas Tree Farm is located on the corner of Frog Pond & Garden Plain Road. Check out their website for more information! www.timberlanetreefarm.com
2A & Their Great Turkey Escapes...
Students worked together to construct a “marble maze” using various building materials from a start to finish to see if their turkey could escape before he was eaten! One group became very creative and built a maze into a turkey!
Second Grade Thanksgiving Centers
The second grade classes recently participated in Thanksgiving Centers. The three classes were divided into three groups. The groups rotated to each classroom to participate in activities.
In one room, the students made teepees and decorated them with Native American symbols. In another room, the students made butter. While making the butter, they listened to stories and sang a song. In the other room the students made a blessing mix and listened to stories. Each ingredient in the blessing mix represented something from the First Thanksgiving.
When the students went back to their rooms, they had their own mini feast. The students had blessing mix and juice boxes. They also got to try pumpkin bread, corn bread, and banana bread. They also could try the butter that they had made on the bread.
The students seemed to really enjoy the activity. We are thankful to the parents who supplied items for the blessing mix!
Could You Survive on the Mayflower???
After learning about the Pilgrims and their trip on the Mayflower, the students in 2B had a chance to try Mayflower fare. They ate biscuits and salted beef (beef jerky). After trying the foods the students recorded whether they liked the food. The results were then turned into a graph. We were surprised that 23 students said they liked the biscuits and beef, and only 1 student said they did not like the taste. Maybe they are such picky eaters after all…………
