Stone Bank School
Reaching Out ~ November 16, 2018
From Mrs. Davies
It is hard to believe that Thanksgiving is already upon us! As we enter the holiday break next week, we extend our thankfulness to our families. Without you, your support, and our children, we could not do the rigorous and meaningful work we do here at Stone Bank.
Many of you will begin your holiday shopping soon. If you're an Amazon shopper, please consider using Amazon Smile in support of Stone Bank's PTO.
AmazonSmile is an easy way for us to support Stone Bank School every time we shop at Amazon (at no additional cost to us!). Earning .5% of every eligible purchase you make is as easy as:
- Visit smile.amazon.com and select “Stone Bank School PTO” as your charity
- Copy the web address of your own personal AmazonSmile page, and use it to replace your current bookmark on the computer you shop from, or save it to your preferred screen on any smartphone to use it instead of the regular amazon app.
- Use your new bookmark to access Amazon when shopping for anything you normally buy! (you can also save items to your cart via the Amazon app if this is easier, but REMEMBER TO CHECKOUT FROM YOUR AMAZON SMILE PAGE!)
.5% may not seem like a lot, but it adds up quickly!
As you fill your tummies with food and your hearts with family and friends, please know that we are thankful for the opportunity to work and grow with all of you!

An Article from our Social Studies Teacher
Talking with Children About News
As a social studies teacher, I’m usually one who loves discussing current events, however, the number of mass shootings and disasters happening in our world make it less than enjoyable. During some rough weeks, I’ve even considered skipping our weekly What’s Up Wednesday, where students can share news we can use. I realize that would be a disservice to our students. With today’s access to social media, the internet, and 24 hour news outlets, students have access to news constantly. Without the right guidance from parents and teachers, they can have trouble understanding what’s going on. Since this can be difficult, I’ve listed a couple of resources to help discuss current events with your child at an age appropriate level.

With all of the craziness going on in the world, it’s important for children and adults to remember there is also a lot of good going on in the world. Check out a few heartwarming stories with your child from the links below.

Current Featured Writers
Ms. Bolinski's favorite part of Charlie Merck's essay:
“My legs were so tired that I felt like they were going to collapse, like a tree under the pressure of a steamboat.”
What set this piece apart ~
This short personal narrative had very descriptive details about a track race. The details paced the story so well that the reader truly felt like s/he was running alongside the writer.
Ms. Bolinski's favorite part of Ryan Justice's essay:
“I slowly advanced on the house, cringing every step as if it was too loud. The water from my SoakR 300 dripped from the tank and streamed down my hand…”
What set this piece apart ~
The lead of this piece of fiction really set up tension and got the reader interested! It makes the reader want to know what kind of mischievous plan is ahead!
Ms. Bolinski's favorite part of Fran Smith's essay:
The extended metaphor that compared getting an idea to an explosive getting closer to a flame.
What set this piece apart~
Fran took not being able to have an idea of what to write about into what she wrote about! The extended metaphor and pace were outstanding.

Toy Drive
The 7th grade girl scout troop is hosting a school toy drive to benefit the Christmas Clearing Council of Waukesha County, November 26th through December 10th. Please bring in new items such as: toys for all ages, mittens, gloves, hats, books for kids 11 and under, gift cards to Walmart, Kohls, and Target, and preteen DIY crafts and hair accessories. A big red barrel will be located in the school office for drop-off donations or feel free to send to school with your child. If our school goal of 100+ items is met, we will celebrate with a special treat before winter break.
Thank you for making this holiday season special for local families in need!
