NSD and SMS Messaging - School Violence Prevention Communication Plan
Skyview Families,
The Student Services, Security and Safety, and Communications Departments have been working together to provide schools with proactive support and messaging to reduce student threats of gun violence. We have seen an increase in these types of threats (social media, verbal and written statements) over the last few weeks. Unfortunately, this is a trend our region is also experiencing.
While the District has distributed information about the serious nature of these incidents, and we require families to sign the “Weapons Letter Acknowledgement Form,” this information does not seem to be reaching all of our students. So, we need to try a different approach.
NSD Leadership is recommending a consistent message delivered by trusted adults at each school to students in grades 4-12 after consulting with school leaders, NSEA, the district’s counselors, and NASA. This school-based communication is in addition to the District continuing to encourage families to talk with their students at home.
The goal is to be explicit about our District’s expectations regarding threats of violence and or gun violence, the serious nature of these incidents, consequences, and how to report a concern. Our hope is that by addressing these topics directly with students, we will reduce the number of incidents our school communities are experiencing.

The information from Skyview Middle School will be as follows:
12/2 - Initial announcement about information upcoming in the weekly Skyview News
12/5 - Live "Sharing of Information" from The Perch by Matt Wallace
12/5 - Blackboard message to SMS Parents with messaging
12/6 - Recorded video of Monday's information shared on The Perch sent to parents and students via Blackboard
12/9 - A recap of what was shared on Monday, December 5th and access to the recorded video included in the weekly Skyview News
We are all hopeful that by being direct with students, sharing the proactive message from trusted school-based staff member(s), and reinforcing the messages with families we can greatly reduce the number of disruptive and challenging incidents in schools.
Sincerely,
Matt Wallace
Principal

Cold and Flu Season - Please read below
Just a reminder to not send your student to school for any of the below reasons:
- Fever greater than 100 degrees, they must be fever free for 24 hours (without use of fever-reducing medications) before they can return to school
- Appearance/behavior- unusually tired difficult to wake, pale in color, lack of appetite, or more irritable
- Nasal drainage/Cough: yellow or green nasal drainage and/or cough, this can expose other children as well as affect other students' concentration
- Vomiting and/or diarrhea- they must be 24 hours since the last episode before they can return to school
- Sore throat along with any of the above symptoms
We are officially in cold and flu season and seeing a lot of illness right now. Sending your student while they are sick puts other students and staff at risk. We understand you do not want your students missing school, but many come to the health room or are not able to even focus while in the classroom. Please allow them to stay home, rest and recover.
The school is not equipped for prolonged care of your sick student. We require that you or an emergency contact pick up your sick child within the hour that you are called. Please notify your school of any changes to your emergency contacts, it is important to have a list of available contacts if we are not able to reach you.
