Handmade in Mexico by Huichol Indians
The Huichol (pronounced Wettchol) Indians are descendents of the Aztecs. There are only about 18,000 Huichol Indians left in Mexico today. They are striving to keep their culture alive and viable.
Most Huichol Indians live in virtually inaccessible areas of Mexico. Because of the need for money, some Huichol Indians have moved to cities from their ancestral homes to cities, and have drawn attention to their rich culture through their art.
The Huichols have only an oral tradition and no written language. In their artwork the Huichol express their deepest religious feelings and beliefs acquired through a lifetime of participation in ceremonies and rites.
From the time they are children, the Huichol learn how to communicate with the spirit world through symbols and rituals. "From small beaded eggs and large jaguar heads to detailed yarn paintings, each is related to a part of Huichol tradition and belief.
