Organelles
Hazel Dequito
Plasma/Cell Membrance
Description: made of millions of smaller molecules that make a flexible container
Function: Holds cell pieces and fluids in the cell and keeps the nasty stuff out.
Found in both animal and plant cells.
Cell Wall
Description: made of cellulose and provides the framework to allow plants to grow high.
Function: keeps a plant's shape.
Only found in plant cells.
Cytoplasm
Description: gel like substance within the cell membrane.
Function: to act as the fluid that fills the cell.
Found in both animal and plant cells.
Nucleus
The brain of the cell and is located in the middle of cytoplasm. Found in both animal and plant cells.
Nuclear Membrane
Has 2 lipid layers and keeps the DNA inside of the nucleus to protect it from substances in the cytoplasm. Found in both animal and plant cells.
Nucleolus
Is the nucleus of the nucleus and is the site of ribosome assembly. Found in animal and plant cells.
Centrioles
Is located by the nucleus and made of micro tubes. Helps with cell division. Found in animal cells.
Chromatin
Found in the nucleus and is the genetic material made of DNA and proteins. Found in both cells.
Ribosomes
Are dense particles and are protein builders and synthesizers of the cell. Found in both cells.
Golgi Apparatus
Looks like a layer of pancakes and gets the molecules, combines them, and packs them in vesicles to store them or send them outside of the cell. Found in both cells.
Endoplasmic Reticulum
Half the membrane in the cell with a lot of surface area. The Ribosomes carry RNA to the ER and then they turn the RNA into proteins that carry out their jobs. Found in both cells.
Mitochondria
Powerhouse of the cell and shaped like a bean. Acts like the digestive system of the cell. Found in both cells.
Chloroplast
Is green and is the food producer of the cell. Found in only plant cells.
Lysosomes
Found in the cytoplasm and digests food and breaks down the cell when it dies. Found in both cells.
Peroxisomes
Are small vesicles found around the cell and absorb the nutrients the cell acquires. Found in both cells.
Vacuole
Membrane that surrounds the mass of fluids. Stores food and nutrients the cell needs to survive. Found in both cells.
Cytoskeleton
"Springy skeleton"
Gives the cell its shape and helps organize the events of cell division. Found in both cells.
