Dec 18-20: Final Exams, Wednesday thru Friday
Dec 23 - Jan 3: Winter Break
From the Principal
Parents,
Our 1st semester is coming to an end. We have 7 days of regular class time followed by our final exam days. Final exams will take place Wednesday, December 18th, thru Friday, December 20th. I have attached the schedule for your review. A few things to keep in mind:
- We give finals as a way of preparing students for finals in their college setting.
- The finals schedule is very "student friendly" having the finals spread out over 3 days.
- If your student is going to be absent during any final exams, please contact your student's teacher in order to plan for an alternative time to take the final. The afternoons are wide open and would be a great time for tests to be taken.
- A make-up time will be provided. Monday, December 23, 2019 from 8am to noon and Monday, December 30, 2019, 8am to noon.
- If your student needs to be released early for some reason, please have them released at the end of a class period. Students will be told to pick up their pass at the end of the hour. This really helps our front office. We will NOT deliver passes during class time.
If you have any questions, please let me know.
Thanks,
Mr. Kalina
Attendance Passes and Finals
This year we are trying something new to have fewer interruptions for students taking finals. We will NOT be delivering passes during class/testing time so please plan ahead.
If you need your student to leave early for a previously scheduled appointment on Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday, please call the attendance office as soon as possible with the time of dismissal. We will have a pass waiting for him/her at the window during passing periods only, which will be 9:35 am and 11:15 am. Please let your student know the time to come to the front office.
Thank you for your understanding and helping us make PLHS an optimal learning place for your students!

Peer Tutoring
Peer tutoring will be available through Dec. 16th (Mondays/Wednesdays, 3:30-4:00, counseling office) this semester and will resume on January 13th for second semester. Please contact Mrs. Dunbar, sdunbar@paplv.org, with any questions.
Parents of Monarch Student-Athletes
We have reserved space at the new Papillion Landing on Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:45-4:45 pm for ALL Monarch athletes not currently in a winter sport. Monarch coaches will be working with athletes on improving their overall ability as an athlete for all sports and all sessions are FREE to our current Monarch athletes. Please encourage your athletes to take advantage of this great facility and opportunity to get better together.
A Message from the School Nurse
I received a message from the Sarpy/Cass Health Department that I will share with you.
The health department is seeing an increase in rapid influenza tests, RSV, and other respiratory illnesses in the community.
The following information is courtesy of the health department:
- FLU SEASON is here! Please protect others, your children and yourself with a flu shot!
- If you cannot afford a flu shot (under insured or uninsured) Midland’s Hospital has a Vaccines for Children Program that will give a flu shot for free if you qualify. Phone number is 402.593.3222.
- Staff/students/family members should stay home when ill and not return to school until fever free for 24 hours without fever reducing medicine unless. If the illness is Pertussis then it is a full 5 days of antibiotics before a student can return to school.
- No Tylenol or Ibuprofen to mask a fever and send a student to school.
- Keep hands away from the mouth, nose, and eyes
- Wash your hands often especially after coughing and blowing your nose. Discard used tissues into the waste container, not a pocket, and wash your hands again.
Vaping and the flu
There is a surge in the usage of vaping gadgets among adolescents. Remind your student vaping is a bad habit that is dangerous to the lungs. Also, sharing vaping gadgets with other students may be a contributing factor for some, not all, students contracting respiratory illness.
I have attached information about the Flu and how to help care for yourself or your student if a diagnosis of the Flu is made by your healthcare provider. Please continue to share with me a diagnosis of an illness concerning your student so I can relay only statistics to Mr. Kalina, principal. Thank you. Annette C. Jeanes, RN, MPH, BSN
