Math
Mathematicians are busy beginning the Geometry Unit with the vocabulary words of point, line, line segment, ray, parallel, perpendicular, symmetrical, right, obtuse and acute. The students are recognizing that Geometry has much vocabulary to keep track of and know. There will be a test on Geometry in letters on Monday, April 8th. We have introduced protractor use, and will be using it more next week.
With FORWARD math assessments next week, the lessons will be designed accordingly to keep any math anxiety low for your mathematician!
Questions to ask about math:
Take a look at an analog clock and try to determine the angle measurement as acute, obtuse or right.
What is easy about using a protractor? What is hard about using a protractor?
Reading/Language Workshop
Language Workshop and Reading Workshop learners are about halfway through the “Power” unit, where they are learning about how the power of words can be used to make big changes in our world. The book that we are currently reading is called, I Dissent; Ruth Bader Ginsburg Makes her Mark. The children were amazed that she is still a Supreme Court Justice at age 86! Her passion for equality began as a young Jewish girl growing up in an era where she saw a lot of discrimination against many ethnicities and gender. Students will end the unit next week by reading about Malala Yousefzai. As a young girl, Malala defied the Taliban in Pakistan and demanded that girls be allowed to receive an education. She was shot in the head by a Taliban gunman in 2012, but survived and went on to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. The book that we will be reading is called Malala Yousafzai: Warrior with Words: Karen Leggett.
Writing Workshop
Writers are currently working on Literary Essays. Students are working with partners to read and analyze picture books. As they read their stories, they collected notes, by annotating on post-it notes. These post-its will be helpful as they provide text evidence in their essays. We have been working on writing a strong introduction that includes a theme from the story, as well as a short summary, and important quotes from the book.
Questions to ask about Literacy:
Are you currently in a Literature Discussion Group? If so, what is the name of the book that you are reading? How does it tied to our theme of Power?
What book are you reading with your partner for your Literary Essay?
Social Studies
Before spring break, we wrapped up our economics unit by selling our products at our stores. The students did a great job and there were so many creative products. Ask your child how their products went and how much money they made!
