Mrs. Poliszczuk's First Grade Class
weekly update
March 17, 2017
This was a short week due to our 2 snow days (a week before spring!). At least we didn't get the 32 inches my family got in Northeast PA.
This week in phonics, students practiced reading and writing words with the /ir/ sound (as in shirt) spelled er, ir, ur and or. Students listened to a story about "Super Girls" with superpowers-Energy Girl, Whirl Girl and Adventure Girl. They are a fun way for students to think about r-controlled vowels.
We will spend the next few weeks reading biographies. This week, students learned about a robot inventor named Tomotaka Takahashi. After reading, students sequenced story events with a partner.
In writing, students are noting details about an animal in order to write a paragraph to inform. Students were given the choice to work alone, with a partner or in a small group. Students will work on this throughout next week.
In math, we are continuing to work on combinations to 10. We are working on building fact fluency. Finding missing part continues to be a difficult skill for students. Extra practice at home would be beneficial. Examples are:
Max built a tower with cubes. (unknown part)
He took 2 cubes off of the tower.
Now the tower has 7 cubes.
How many cubes did the tower start with?
The problem should be set up as:
_____ - 2 =7
Mia had 7 red flowers in a vase.
She put some yellow flowers in the vase. (unknown part)
Now she has 10 flowers in the vase.
How many yellow flowers did she put in?
The problem should be set up as:
7+ ___=10
Students may then use a variety of strategies to find the missing part.
In SS, we spent some more time talking about goods and services and producers and consumers.

St. Patrick's Day
The students had fun today creating a 4 leaf clover telling why they feel they are lucky. They will be hanging above our lockers for a few weeks. If you are in the building, come and take a look.
*If your child did not finish, please have them complete it this weekend and return it on Monday. Thank you!
Wherever you go, and whatever you do, may the luck of the Irish be there with you.
