Empowering Students In The Classroom

Look at how this SES teacher has tackled empowering students by satisfying the need for power and freedom in the classroom. Students feel powerful because they are presented with opportunities to make choices within the classroom environment that are safe and predictable. Students consult the reading center work board to determine where they begin rotations. This is done without teacher direction after establishing the procedures. The board displays three rotations including: read to self, teacher group, Work on Writing, Computer/Listening, and Word Work.

  • Student choice is embedded into the rotations as they are provided eight different methods for word work; six different options for the Work on Writing; three seating options for read to self.

  • Students are given free choice to determine where and how often during independent time they desired to participate in activities within the Work on Writing, Computer/Listening, and Word Work choices.

  • During read to self, students freely obtain fluency phones if they wish to listen to themselves as they read aloud.

Word Walls For Future Consideration

As we begin to think about classrooms for the 2015-2016 school year, remember to consider use of wall space for student work and resources. This picture comes from a BCPS teacher in a Lighthouse school. The bulletin board at the beginning of the school year was blank with only the title Tech Talk. As the weeks went by and new terms were introduced and used as part of blended learning the terms were placed on the board. When the board runs out of room older words (now internalized) are taken down and replaced with newer words.
