A Note From The Principal

Greetings Parents and Scholars,

Marian Wright Edelman is an American activist for children’s rights and educational advancement. I share her spirit of advocacy for children and her quest for educational equality. She once said, “Education remains one of the black community’s most enduring values”. As we open our doors at the George and Veronica Phalen Leadership Academy Tuesday, September 8th it is that value of children first and their educational plight that resonates with me. I want all scholars and parents to know that I not only advocate for your scholar’s education but also for his or her social and emotional well-being.

Although we are a closed campus to visitors during this COVID-19 pandemic, we are always open to your voices and concerns. We are committed to constant dialogue and transparency. You will continue to receive detailed information via our newsletter, emails, robo calls etc. Please work with us as we put children first in our decisions.

Advocate for Children,

Dr. Sue Starr

In Person Learning

We are eagerly looking forward to welcoming back those of you who opted for in person learning on Tuesday! Doors open at 7:45am. Please keep your scholars in the vehicle until their temperature is taken by a staff member.

Please carefully read the following document. It outlines our in person procedures and protocols.

Remote Learning

Any scholar that previously opted for our remote learning option will be required to remain at home for the remainder of the nine weeks. During the week of September 28, a survey will be sent out giving you the option to apply for in person learning if you are interested in returning. Any open in person seats for the second nine weeks will be filled on a first come, first serve basis.

With the majority of our staff shifting their focus to in person learning, the format of our remote learning option is changing slightly. Please refer to the following document for more in depth information of our remote learning option going forward.

Kickboard

This year all classroom teachers will be using Kickboard for our Positive Behavior Support System. For the month of August, Kindergarten and 5th grade have done an outstanding job rewarding scholar dollars! For the month of August, over 1,000 interactions were rewarded and all scholars have a positivity rating of 77% or above! Well done scholars and team! Thank you Ms. Foster, Ms. Macey, Ms. Zabel, Mr. Brubaker, Mr. VanHorn, and Ms. Long for creating a positive classroom culture and recognizing scholar success!
