February 1, 2018
Hello Holland Elementary Families,
I'd also like to pass along special thanks to the PTO on behalf of the staff and me. I see great examples of teaching and learning everyday at school. One of the ways that we're able to maintain this academic climate is due to the support of the PTO. In addition to funding so many special events for children and their families, the organization does so much to enhance instruction. Recently, the PTO made purchases for the school that included:
- Raz-Kids subscriptions
- Tri-Fold boards for students to use in the science fair, third grade wax museum, and sixth grade heritage projects
- Flip-Grid subscriptions
- Six dual-light microscopes
- Science Fair ribbons
- Headphones
- Flocabulary account
These purchases are possible only when families support our PTO. The staff and I thank the PTO, the PTO executive board, and all of the families who attend events and give their time and energy to organize these activities.

Did our chips survive the trip?
The ENGINEERING DESIGN PROCESS AT WORK! To simulate the problem of safely landing humans on Mars, our STEM students designed “ships” for their human “chips,” which will travel through the US Mail to HES. Students were faced with using a limited amount of material to build a safe vessel that would transport their chip without breaking! On February 9th, our STEM students will open their boxes, and see if their designs were effective. To learn more about the Ship the Chip challenge (which you can try on your own!), download the PDF instructions on HES’s STEM webpage!
What’s the big deal about a SUPERMOON? And did you miss Wednesday’s super-blue-blood moon? You can learn all about the Moon at NASA'S Observe the Moon website, and catch video and images of Wednesday’s lunar event at Time's Magazine's website.
Thank you for your support, and please email amangold@crsd.org with any questions.
HES Science Fair
Holland’s 7th Annual Science Fair will be held on Wednesday, April 4, 2018 from 6:00-7:30 pm. All students in K-6 are encouraged to participate. Researching scientific ideas and using the scientific method are powerful learning experiences!
Children should start thinking about what their entry could be! Projects can be an experiment, a demonstration, a scientific collection, or information on a scientific topic. Students can work individually or in a small group.

PTO Tricky Tray
For those who may be new to the district and or the school, below is information about the Holland PTO's Tricky Tray event. This is one of the PTO's biggest fundraising event of the year. It will take place on February 23rd and 24th. All proceeds go to the Holland PTO and are used to service the school and our students. Last year’s proceeds from this event enabled us to buy 60 new Chromebooks, two charging stations, and so much more.
- Tricky Tray is a silent raffle auction that takes place in the gym of the school. Parents and the local community donate gift certificates, money, and specific items to be raffled off on February 23rd and 24th.
- Tickets may be purchased during a pre-sale online and at the event. Ticket pricing and purchasing details to come.
- There will also be an option to purchase 50/50 raffle tickets as well as premium tickets for premium trays.
- The Tricky Tray committee will provide all families with a tray, and families may choose to donate.
- You do not need to be present at the calling of the winners to win your tray.
- This success of this event is reliant on the school community and volunteers. A sign up genius will be going out to the school community as we get closer to the event.
- Specific dates, ticket prices, tray delivery, drop off dates, and event times will be coming home with your children, sent in email form, displayed online, and on the HES Facebook page in the weeks to come.
