Principal's Message
Mariner Families and Community,
I hope you and your families are doing well. We are about 12 weeks into the 1st semester, and we have about 6 weeks to go. Students are enrolled in three classes, and the majority of these classes will be finished at the end of January. There is still plenty of time to improve grades! In remote learning, attendance is measured by logging in to Schoology and/or attending Zoom class. However, just attending does not earn a passing grade or credit. Students must engage with learning – participate, perform, complete assignments – in order to achieve academically. If your student is just logging in and then playing games (some parents have reported this), then they are not engaging in learning. How do you know if they are engaged? Check their grades. Teachers are required to update their grades at least twice a month. Please use the Schoology or Family Access portal to see your student's current grades. If you have any questions about the grades that your student cannot answer, please make sure to contact the teacher directly. It’s important to note that students need to earn every credit if they are to stay on track for graduation.
We’ve been asked if Mariner is planning on having school photos this year. The answer is YES! Photos will be available for purchase and will also be used for the yearbook and for ASB cards. We are waiting for the 2nd semester to take photos in hopes that we’ll be in some type of in-person learning by then. If we remain in remote learning, we will still plan on having a photo day on campus. More information will be sent out at a later date.
As always, please feel free to contact the school if you have any needs or concerns. We are here to help.
Go Marauders!

Counseling Corner
Hello from the counseling department!
A My Toolbox Booklet was sent home for every student last week, this booklet is a collection of various coping activities and strategies that can help students work through or process emotions in a healthy way. It will provide a break from the computer screen. It was great visiting all classrooms throughout November and talking about transcripts and credits with students. We recommend students to review their transcript, take a look at their second-semester schedule, if they have questions or find errors, contact their counselors either by phone, email, or a Schoology message concerns/questions.
Thank you!
The counseling team.

Mukilteo Teen Book Awards
The Mukilteo Teen Book Award (MTBA) was established during the 2012-2013 school year. The librarian at Kamiak and I had a conversation. We felt that many awards that were given out to books in the Young Adult book industry did not represent what students in the Mukilteo School District were necessarily interested in reading. We wanted to create an award list that sparked joy with our students. For the last nine years we have partnered with two teen librarians from the Sno-Isle Library System and one retired teen-librarian to create a list of 12-14 books with a variety of genres that would appeal to the students at Mariner and Kamiak High School. In the nine years since we started this endeavor, our students and staff have enjoyed the books that have been selected.
This year the MTBA awards looks a little different with distant learning. Book talks and book trailers are virtual, and students can watch these at their own leisure through a playlist created in Safari Montage or playlist that defaults to YouTube on my library webpage. Students can place books on hold for curbside checkout. These titles are also available through the Sno-Isle Library system in print, audio, and eBook form. You can find more information located on my library page here: https://www.mukilteoschools.org/Page/12065
If your young adult child is looking for a recommendation in needing a book to read, I highly suggest looking at this list.
Warmly,
Stephanie Wilson
Teacher-Librarian

Stay Connected!
Information and news about Mariner High School are available in a variety of formats. This year, you will receive a phone message and email from the district if we close or delay school. This helps ensure we reach everyone, including those without an email address on file, before students stand outside at a bus stop, and before parents leave for work. If you added a text message number in the Blackboard portal https://mukilteoschooldistrict.bbcportal.com/ you would also receive a text message. As usual, school delays or closures will be posted on the district website and posted through FlashAlert, which also feeds into mainstream local news feeds.
