Captain's Log
PASS CHRISTIAN PUBLIC SCHOOL DISTRICT
AHOY, PIRATES!
By all accounts and based on my class visits, last week was a great week! Thank you for all that you are doing to advance our work. We have received our performance levels! Your principal should reveal them to you shortly if they have not already done so. MDE will release our school and district grades Thursday after the state board meeting. We have BIG news to share as soon as MDE gives the ok!
Keep pushing toward our goals. Until we have earned all 1000 points as a district, we have work to do with our students. We have a goal of becoming a 700+-point school district; that would put us in the top 5. We will reach the goal when everyone is on board with the vision. One person not doing what is required can cause us to miss our goal and to fail to provide our students with an education that aligns with our beliefs. It only takes one in a district our size; let that sink in. ONE. Are you on board? Are you committed to excellence? Are you willing to hold your peers accountable for failure to make the shift? Until each one of us can answer with a resounding, "YES," our goal will slip through our fingers. I believe we can get to 100% "Yes!" because I believe in all of you as does the admin team. Let's level up!
With that, I submit the Log. #stayhungry #excellencemarksthespot #committedtoexcellence

Modern Age Fundraising
According to Wikipedia (:-), Crowdfunding is the practice of funding a project or venture by raising small amounts of money from a large number of people, typically via the Internet. In PCSD, we allow crowdfunding in the way of Donor's Choose, Go Fund Me (Keeps 10% of funds raised), etc. We ask you to be considerate when describing your school and district. We have seen positively stated project pleas funded just as much as a "poverty-stricken" project plea.
The CFO would like to remind faculstaff of the following:
2-All items purchased with the funds from the funded project belong to the school district and must be marked accordingly with the appropriate inventory tags.
3-Any funds leftover from GoFundMe accounts along with receipts must be submitted to the finance office.
We have had approximately 7 Donor's Choose projects funded. We are asking all who have had projects funded or who have pending projects to please submit your request (after the fact) for inventory and documentation of following board policy.
If you have a current If you have questions, please contact Mrs. Paige Bromen. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.
September is Suicide Prevention Month
We must continue to teach them about the effects and consequences related to cyberbullying and standard bullying. While understanding that suicide is more complex than just bullying. As a result, Jim Keith warned that we should not draw links to bullying as the sole cause of suicide in adolescents as it is not a natural response to bullying.
Tips for Intervening:
1- Be factual...do not oversimplify it
2- Inform parents and community members
3- Provide hotline assistance
4- Identify at-risk students
5- Provide support for faculty and staff
6- Seek assistance from behavioral health personnel
As a reminder, we contract with Dr. Mong to provide services to students who have been identified as students who are at-risk emotionally. Their seeing her does not mean they are suicidal, but that they need emotional support.
FERPA Update and WARNING!!!
Also, be careful with emails! Sharing a child's information via email can be a violation of FERPA. One example shared at the meeting involved another student finding out IEP information about a peer and sharing it with other classmates who then used the information to bully and torment the child. Can you say, "lawsuit?"
What about those conversations we have in passing while the line of students waits patiently for us to finish? You guessed it, FERPA violation.
It is NEVER ok to share student data outside of the school with anyone other than the custodial parent unless there is a signed release in the office. This includes grandparents, aunts, uncles, etc.
Stay clear of these types of behaviors. Never talk about a student in the hallways or workrooms. Only share information with the student's current teacher.

Novice Teacher Links: Every Child's Hero
Dr. Rita Pierson once stated that every child deserves a champion. Teachers can be seen as a child's everyday hero. PIrate learners deserve an environment where they are accepted, valued, and safe (physically and emotionally). How we discipline our students demonstrates this belief as well. Classrooms must be nurturing learning zones where mutual respect exists.
Below you will find two articles from this month's Ed Leadership journal regarding classroom discipline. The first one focuses on getting rid of the old behavior charts...our upper elementary and above students indicate that it does NOT work. Public shaming is not the Pirate way to get our children to do what is required behaviorally.
The second article talks about the importance of the RELATIONSHIPS between you and our Pirate Learners. Building rapport and mutual respect is the foundation for great management. They are not looking for a friend; however, they are looking for a caring adult who will use the structure of the class and instruction to provide a high-quality world-class education.
ENJOY!
