Notes from Dr. Irvin
Your Weekly WGHS eNews for December 20
Hello Parents and Guardians,
I hope everyone will get a chance to connect with what you value and enjoy over the break that is approaching. I recently heard a CEO note that when you run a long race, you need to run some laps at a slower pace. There is increasing support for more modulation of exertion, so here's to the opportunity for your student to sleep in, reduce stress, and exercise growing autonomy. We hope you all have a great break.
Best,
Matt Irvin

Renaissance Awards Program Change
Please note a change on our calendar for our scheduled Renaissance Recognition Programs before school on Friday, Jan. 18 for 9th grade and Friday, Jan. 25 for 10th & 11th grade. We canceled those programs. We are going to recognize our Renaissance Students in a student-only setting in our cafeteria at the end of January or early February. We will notify the students next semester and are hoping to be able to recognize a greater number of students by making this change. Thank you for your understanding.

- Julie Burchett shared, "We had one of the Real world Problems - Global Poverty class capstone projects happen last week--Webster Walks for Water. It was a walk-a-thon, where students went out and collected pledges for each lap they walked or ran. The student coordinators were Phoebe Cattoor, Miles Harmann, and Tori Watson. We are still tallying totals but we will have made over $725 to be donated to the WaterisLife organization. WATERisLIFE addresses the two components of the world water crisis: Water scarcity: by drilling wells and creating rainwater catchment systems and - Water quality: by providing a variety of cutting edge filtration technologies. Even though the students who created this event are seniors and will be gone next year, other students have already expressed interest in keeping this event going in the future!"
Pat Voss, Alumni Director, shared, "On Sunday, December 16, 2018 I took six flag corp members and a jazz combo to the Battle of the Bulge program at Royal Orleans on Telegraph Road. These ten volunteers presented the colors, national anthem, played taps and did a twenty minute program of music from the 1940s. This is the sixth year WGHS has assisted with the Battle of the Bulge program, and the veterans look forward each year to our students coming to take part in this program. I am always so pleased because our students take the time to talk to the veterans and assist them with their physical challenges. These young men and young lady represented our school, our school community, and their entire generation in an outstanding manner."
The following students took part in the event:
Daniel Bloomer (11)
Jackson Bontty (12)
Joe Castleman (12)
Duncan Clipp (11)
Matt Muldoon (11)
Matt Putnam (10)

Procedures for Check-Out During the School Day
We often get questions about how to check out of school early for appointments. If students know in advance that they need to check out from school, they should bring a written, signed note from a parent stating the time at which they are to check out. Students should present their request to the assistant principal’s office before school. Parents may also call in to the Assistant Principal's office ahead of time and have students check out at the designated time. When leaving school during the day, students must check out through the assistant principal’s office. If students do not follow this procedure, their absence will be considered cutting class. In case of sickness, students check out through the school nurse. In case of emotional upset, students should see their counselors or an administrator to discuss whether or not to remain in school.
When students need to check out of school early:
- Call the Assistant Principal's office before the designated time and report the absence. You may also send a note with the student to be presented to the Assistant Principal's office before school.
- At the designated time, your student will receive a pass to check out if you called ahead. The student will check out in the Assistant Principal's office.
- You do not need to enter the building if you have called the absence in and communicated a pick-up location with your child. However, if you choose to pick up your child in the building, you must do so in the Assistant Principal's office. Upon entering the building, sign-in in the main office and proceed to the Assistant Principal's office.
All attendance procedures are outlined in detail in the Student Handbook. To report your child's absence, please call your child's assistant principal's office directly:
