Ms. Venturino's AVID - Week 7

August 31 - September 4

What we did this week

This week we began our college unit! On Tuesday, students completed a WebQuest on the basics of college. Students used their iPads to research the answers. On Thursday & Friday, we read and annotated an article tiled "New survey: High school grads feel unprepared. Are their schools at fault or are they?"

What's coming up next week

Next week, we will use the article to do a type of debate called Philosophical Chairs-- students will pick a side to debate, and must be prepared to defend their pick. At any time, students can switch sides if they feel like they no longer agree with their original choice.

AVID Parent Night

AVID Parent Night is next Wednesday from 5:30-6:30 at MVA.

This is a mandatory event for all AVID parents and families. Please plan to attend with your student.

We look forward to seeing you on Wednesday night!

Progress Report #1

Progress reports went home with students today.

If students are not satisfied with their grade, here's what they can do to improve their grade:

TRFs: Any missing TRF can be made up on Thursdays at lunch with our AVID student leaders. Students must bring a completed TRF to Mr. Leon's room (408) at lunch, complete the tutorial with a student leader, complete their reflection, then turn in their completed TRF to me.

Binder Checks: Binder checks can be made up before school any day that students see my door open before school. I'm usually in my classroom by 7:30 to 7:45.

Blog Posts: Weeks 3, 5, and 6 blog posts can be made up directly via Jupiter on Juno Docs. (See below for more info)

Other assignments: All other assignments may be turned in late for up to full credit.

e-Portfolio Update

We have been using Weebly for the last 6 weeks for our AVID ePortfolios. Weebly is an excellent website-building program; however, it is excellent on a computer, and less than acceptable on the iPad. Therefore, we will be switching our ePortfolios from Weebly to KidBlog.

I appreciate all of my students and their parents for being patient, and I'm very proud of my students for persevering with Weebly. We gave it our best effort, and at this point, it is not meeting our needs as a class.

I will have information on KidBlog in next week's newsletter.

Important Upcoming Dates

AVID Website

We have started a website for Mar Vista Academy AVID. I have been working hard to add in information about AVID, including about individual teachers, our program, and a blog that will feature our students, teachers, and parents.
