Edison Academy of Differentiated Learning

July 2019

Welcome Back!

Dear Edison Families,

I trust your summer is going well! I wanted to take a moment to introduce myself and share my excitement about being appointed as the new principal of Edison Academy. If my first few days on campus serve as any guide, then it’s clear that this school community cares deeply about the education of its’ children. I look forward to continuing to build on that passion! Now, just a little bit about me professionally and personally.

Professionally, I earned my Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from California State University, San Bernardino and shortly thereafter began my teaching career in the Ontario-Montclair School District. There I taught in kindergarten through sixth grade, after-which I spent some time outside the classroom as a teacher on assignment supporting classroom teachers. From there, I landed in the Chino Valley Unified School District, where I spent four years, working as an assistant principal for Rolling Ridge Elementary, Chino Adult & Continuation High School, Walnut Avenue Elementary and then finishing my time there as the interim-principal for Walnut before returning back to my roots here in OMSD as the Principal of Kingsley Elementary.

Personally, my wife Dana is an amazing teacher here in OMSD. We have three great boys. Noah will be a sophomore next year, Rhys will be starting middle school, and A.J. will move into fifth grade. How quickly the time goes!

For those of us in education, August is the time of year to reconnect with old friends and welcome new friends. To those students and parents who are new to Edison, we extend an especially warm welcome and best wishes for an exciting and successful year in your new school. We hope that you will quickly feel at home and become involved in the activities of our school through the Parent Faculty Association, School Site Council, other advisory committees, and volunteering opportunities here at school.

Our first event of the new school year will be Kindergarten Orientation on Tuesday, August 6 from 8:00 – 9:00 a.m. followed by a campus tour from 9:00-9:30 a.m. The intent of the Kindergarten Orientation is to allow parents to meet their child’s teacher and review important procedures and routines prior to the first day of school for kindergarten and transitional kindergarten students. We hope that this short visit will help parents feel more comfortable beginning the first day of school. Our campus tour will offer families new to Edison a chance to walk the campus, and get more relevant information for those new to our school.

Our class lists will be posted near the front office on Monday, August 5. The information will be posted on August 5 after 3:30 p.m. and not before so that lists can be as complete as possible. The first student day will be Wednesday, August 7 and will be a full day beginning at 7:45 a.m. until 2:25 p.m. Our half day kindergarten and transitional kindergarten will meet from 7:30 a.m. until 11:15 a.m. for morning classes and from 11:00 – 2:45 pm for the afternoon classes.

Our Back-To-School evening will be Thursday, August 15 from 5:00 – 6:30 p.m. and will begin in the multi-purpose room. You will have the opportunity to visit your child’s classroom, begin to form a relationship with the classroom teacher, and learn about our school, the grade level curriculum, the importance of regular attendance, and the incredible year in store for your child. Also, a quick reminder that August 15 will be a minimum school day with a 12:30 p.m. dismissal for 1 - 8 and all Kindergarten classes attending in the morning from 7:30 a.m. - 11:15 a.m.

Our front office will be open to assist with any questions starting July 29, from 7:30 am – 3:00 pm.

I hope you enjoy the rest of your summer and are as excited as I am about the year ahead. I look forward to the opportunity to meet you and your family as we begin the new school year.

Best regards,

Hugo Lopez
