Empowering Trauma-Informed Schools
Connecting Trauma Informed Practices to Educational Systems
Collaboration between Carbon Lehigh Intermediate Unit 21 & Armstrong Indiana Intermediate Unit 28
The curriculum was developed and created by the Carbon Lehigh Intermediate Unit's Resiliency Team, Rosemary Lamparella and Carli Ferris Harrel, with funding secured by Senator Pat Browne and provided via a grant from PDE. Armstrong Indiana Intermediate Unit's Training and Consultation Team members, Mariha Shields and Amanda Anderson, completed facilitator training to reproduce and transmit materials.

The first module builds foundational awareness. it provides background knowledge about the progression of policies that support trauma-informed practices in education. It provides the definition of trauma and identifies events that can be considered traumatic. It creates opportunities for discussion and planning around identifying risk factors for exposure to trauma as well as how to improve and integrate protective factors for all children in the classroom.
Module 2: Recognition of Trauma's Impacts
The second module provides an easy-to-understand explanation of how the brain develops and makes connections. It discusses the impact of traumatic experiences on brain development. Triggers are explained. Viewing behavior as a form of communication rather than choices is a key idea. Finally, strategies for avoiding re-traumatization and incorporating regulating brain breaks into the curriculum are presented.
