District Goal: WE empower all students to achieve post-high school success.
Open Enrollment for 2018-2019 School Year
The Beaverton School District will offer open enrollment for students living within the BSD service area for the 2018-19 school year at the schools listed below.
Applications for open enrollment are available on the District website, at each school and at the Administration Center, 16550 SW Merlo Rd., and will be accepted from Friday, December 15, 2017 through Monday, January 29, 2018 prior to 2:00 p.m. Students may only apply to two schools. Completed applications should be returned to the school for which the student is applying. Applications to more than two (2) schools will be denied.
Elementary Schools (# of open slots)
- Barnes (20)
- Fir Grove (30)
- Greenway (30)
- Kinnaman (20)
- McKay (30)
- Sexton Mountain (30)
- Terra Linda (30)
- Vose (20)
Middle Schools (# of open slots)
- Whitford (20)
Principals will make the final determinations as to what grade levels will be filled with these Open Enrollment slots.
There are some important factors families must consider when applying for open enrollment:
- Transportation to the new school is the responsibility of the family. Buses do not travel from the resident school to the open enrollment school; however, occasionally the student may live close to the attendance boundary of the open enrollment school. In this case, parents may submit a written request by completing a “No Transportation Zone Request Form.”
- Approval is for the duration of the current school level only (i.e., elementary, middle or high school).
- There is no guarantee of sibling applications being approved.
- Commitment to attend any school should be for the entire academic year.
- A lottery system may have to be implemented if there are more applications than allocations available.
- Copies of the completed applications will be distributed by the receiving school principal, pending a letter or conversation with the parent/guardian of the student.
Parents will be informed of the decisions by the principal of the school applied to within one week after the conclusion of the open enrollment period. Parents will need to confirm acceptance at that time.
Contact your school if you have any questions regarding the process.

Volunteer Matching Funds
Intel Involved Matching Grant Foundation matches employee and retiree time with a $10 donation for every volunteer hour. The District and schools received a total of $131,000 from the 2016 Intel volunteer hours.
For Intel employees, the cut off for logging 2017 hours is January 15, 2018. Don’t delay, log your hours now! Head to Goto/reporthours from your work computer. The Intel Foundation will also match 100% of donations to our schools.
Many other local employers provide matching funds for volunteer time or financial donations to schools and the District. Companies with volunteer match programs include Columbia Sportswear, Genentech, Mentor Graphics, Motorola, Nike, Oracle and Symantec.
This is not a comprehensive list. Please check with your human resources department to see if your company offers a volunteer matching program.
Inclement Weather Information
When the weather gets snowy or icy, school schedules may be affected. The District generally posts the announcement of delayed school opening or school closure by 5:30 a.m. All Portland Metro area media outlets announce the information on TV newscasts and online.
The District makes decisions based on the ability to operate school buses safely; the ability for students and parents to get to school safely, and the ability of employees to get to work safely and on time. The decision that is made will be for the entire District. As always, parents may choose to make different decisions based on their particular location.
The District will notify parents via SchoolMessenger with a Non-School Hours Emergency message. Please manage your communication preferences in SchoolMessenger InfoCenter.
For the latest inclement weather information:
- Log on to the District website and a light blue message banner will be posted on the top of the main page with the status of District operations.

Early Release in Action: Fifth-grade Community Building at McKinley Elementary
What is a community? What attitudes must one possess to be a successful member of a community? Those are the questions the specialist (P.E., Music and Spanish) teachers at McKinley Elementary School are asking during their week four early release time.
The team chose to focus their collaboration on community building with fifth-graders. “Last spring, our specialist team decided we wanted to design an inquiry-based unit with a focus on social skills development for fifth graders in order to build trust and community across the entire grade level,” says Spanish teacher Benjamin Fong.
McKinley Elementary School is in the process of becoming a Primary Years Programme (PYP) school. The PYP attitudes students are learning include: appreciation, commitment, confidence, cooperation, creativity, curiosity, empathy, enthusiasm, independence, integrity, respect and tolerance. These are the attitudes the team hopes to reinforce through learning experiences that incorporate problem solving, and puzzles that integrate social skills, thinking skills, reflection and communication.
The team uses early release time on the fourth Wednesday of each month to design challenges for “tribe days.” The team separated the fifth graders into 15 tribes, each with six to seven kids from a mix of all four of the fifth-grade classes, as well as students from the Structured Routines Center (SRC). On tribe days, the tribes are each given a challenge and must work as a team to complete it. “In their tribes, students practice being risk takers and integral members of a team. They are working with a diverse group of personalities and no challenge can be completed without all members of the team,” says Fong.
“These are restorative places, where kids can feel safe, and when they feel safe, they learn,” says P.E. teacher Dan Pitner.
At their meeting on November 29, the team debriefed the month’s tribe day, the Human Machine. They watched video of the tribes’ challenge, discussed what went well and what could be improved. They also began planning for January’s tribe day and the culminating event that will take place in May.
