Holiday Edition 2018

5th Annual PTSA Council Chili Cook Off

Saturday, Jan. 19th 2019 at 11am-2pm

Franklin High School, 31000 Joy Road, Livonia, MI, USA

It is time once again to get the Dads, Grandpas, &/or Uncles to join and support their favorite PTAs, earn money for their favorite schools, and have a great time while doing it. Male LPS teachers &/or administrative staff are welcome too!!

The past 4 years have been very successful and lots of fun for those participating and for those enjoying all the delicious chili's. Of course we would love even more participation this year from all the schools. Attached is the entry form. If you have any questions please let us know.

Founders Day - February 13, 2019

We will follow the same format with each unit nominating ONE staff volunteer and ONE parent/grandparent/guardian volunteer that has made an impact in their school through their work with PTA. Middle school and high school units will also nominate ONE student PTSA member to be honored. I will need the nomination forms returned prior to the Christmas break (December 21, 2018) to have time to put the printed program together so start thinking about your nominees. I have created Google Forms to make this easier and to avoid misinterpretation of handwriting/spelling mistakes. Submit one form per nominee. Once submitted you will receive an email with the information you provided.

For those who may be new to PTA and Founders Day, it is our chance to celebrate PTA and everything you do for our schools and students. It involves dinner (and dessert!) and a program honoring the volunteers that are nominated by each unit as mentioned above. Each unit purchases one or more tables to allow the unit's executive board, principal(s) and honored guests to attend and there is a centerpiece contest with prizes.

We will again use the Reflections theme which is 'Heroes Around Me', so I hope you are all thinking of ideas for your amazing centerpieces. We hope to again do a slideshow highlighting all of the amazing events put on by our units so make sure you are taking pictures!

Invitation and RSVP information will be sent soon, but if you have questions please don't hesitate to contact me.

Reflections Ceremony - January 15th

Reflections Entries Have Arrived!

Creative students from fourteen Livonia schools have submitted entries in this year's Reflections arts contest. Together, they have created over 120 works of art with the theme of "Heroes Around Me," spanning all six arts categories: visual arts, photography, literature, film production, dance choreography, and music composition.

In the coming days, we'll hand off the projects to our team of judges. Then we'll be finalizing our plans for the district-wide Reflections celebration on January 15th at Franklin High School PAC. Viewing of the projects will begin at 6:30 pm and the awards ceremony will start at 7 pm. Stay tuned for more details about how we'll celebrate the great work of our Reflections participants.

Membership Goals & Contests

Continue your membership drive thru the winter. Council has a goal of 4800 members this year and we are at 73% .

Michigan PTA is running monthly membership challenges. Below are the next two you can focus on.

December: The Gift of Dads

Units that recruit at least 15 dads/male members and host a men-oriented welcome event. (Perfect for our Dads Chili Cook Off!)
January: Fit Unit Frenzy
Units that have increased membership over 2017-18 numbers by at least 19 members by January 28th. New Units for 2018-19: Have recruited 200 members by January 28th.

December/January (Bonus): Re-commitment
Units that host a membership drive event between December 1, 2018 and January 28, 2019 that brings in at least 19 additional members.

Units that complete a monthly challenge must 1) use MemberHub to submit membership, 2) report the achievement to membership@michiganpta.org by the 28th of that month to be eligible for the drawing.

Member Hub Store - A Look Beyond Selling Memberships

Now that everyone has settled into their year I wanted to talk a bit about options for using the Member Hub Store beyond selling memberships.

DONATIONS - Churchill High School was able to collect $350 from adding a donation button in their store. Parents can donate at any time throughout the year. For example, if you are collecting money to use for Staff Appreciation luncheons. You can add a "Staff Appreciation Luncheon" button to your store and direct people there instead of them writing a check, sending it to the school with a student, in an envelope and then someone from the PTA has to collect all the checks and make a trip to the bank.

FUND RUN- Kennedy Elementary added a Fund Run button to their store and was able to collect donations from family & friends near and far. This is all done without the PTA losing a % of donations to a fun run company. Kennedy's PTA President, Sara Bennett, wrote a review on their experience. (SEE BELOW)

SPIRIT WEAR - If your school has mugs, bags or other items with your logo on them and you have a lot laying around take some pictures and sell them on the MH store.

SELLING TICKETS - If you are selling tickets to a dance or spring BBQ, add a button to the MH store. Add a memo line to include the teachers name so tickets can be sent home with students.

Kennedy's Fund Run & Member Hub

For this year's Fund Run, Kennedy Elementary utilized our MemberHub Store to collect donations. People were able to access the store's website without logging into MemberHub and donate to our school using a computer or phone and their credit card. We were able to create a link so people could donate only to our Fund Run. We were able to denote the $5 increments and allow the person donating to select how many $5's they wanted to donate. It made things super easy for people who are either out of town, not able to write a check, or who do not carry cash on them to donate at their leisure. They were also able to donate to multiple students in one school in one transaction. During our initial set up, we were able to set a date and time when the link was no longer active. That allowed us to automatically have the site shut down when we needed it to without going back into the system to shut it down on our own. When it came time to calculate the amount that was donated through our store's website, it was easy to upload and sort to a spreadsheet. However, there was not an easy way to access a quick total from the website, it needed to be downloaded into a spreadsheet first. In year's past, we had used PayPal and were met with so many headaches. It was extremely difficult to figure out which donation went to which student and for what dollar amounts, and whatnot. Using MemberHub made it so much easier and nicer to account for all of the donations made in honor of specific students. We really enjoyed working with our MemberHub Store to collect donations for our Fund Run, and enjoyed the ease of figuring out which donations went to which student for what dollar amount. We will be using MemberHub again for future use.
