Construction wages reach $30 per hour
At 3.1% year-over-year growth, wages in the construction industry are rising faster than the rest of the nonfarm private sector, reaching $30 per hour. IGED (Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day)
The Kansas City section of the Society of Women Engineers (SWE-KC) would like to extend an invitation to an event which aims at better equipping young women for the future: Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day (IGED).
IGED is a day established to help acquaint young women with the opportunities available in the field of engineering. SWE-KC is holding Kansas City’s ninth annual IGED on Friday, February 22, 2019 at Bartle Hall Convention Center. IGED targets high school females who show interest and aptitude in the areas of STEM. This year, we aim to have 325 students accompanied by 150 female professional mentors.
We are looking to you to recommend 12 high school females (grades 9th-12th) who would benefit from this exposure to engineering. Included below, you will find
- letter to share with your students,
- student registration form (which must be received by us with payment of $20/student by January 18),
- Permission Slip/Waiver that needs to be signed by the student’s parents and a tentative schedule of the day.
At this time, payment must either be cash or check and needs to be mailed to the address listed below by January 18th in order for your student’s registration to be completed. There are two methods available for registration: Mail to the address below the registration form and permission slip

What is a CTSO? Career and Technical Student Organizations (CTSO) integrate into Career and Technical Education programs and courses to extend teaching and learning through innovative programs, business and community partnerships and leadership experiences at the school, state and national levels. CTSOs are a powerful avenue for helping our nation address key challenges such as workforce development, student achievement, economic vitality and global competitiveness.
The Guide to Career and Technical Student Organizations (PDF) can help educators decide which organizations would benefit the students in their schools.
To learn more about each of the organizations see the information provided below or click HERE for more information.
If you are interested in starting a new chapter, please visit the websites of these organizations or reach out to a fellow colleague who already has an established chapter at their school.

KTEEA (KS Technology & Engineering Education Association)
During the past year, there has been a renewed interest in reviving the organization from a dormant state. I am hoping to convince you to become a member of this organization and become active (as much as you can) with your colleagues across the state. Just within the first few weeks of starting the organization, over 30 people have said they will join. You may have been one of those people, if you are that is great, if not I hope you do decide to join. I believe there are many benefits to becoming a member.
First, you can connect to other professionals in the field. This approach will allow you to be proactive in educational decision-making related to Technology & Engineering Education as well as traditional programs as well. A collective voice is much stronger than individuals discussing current issues within our areas of expertise. We can go from “the tail wagging the dog” to “the dog wagging the tail”. Since the late 1980s, at least at PSU, we have only issued BSEDs in Technology Education, or Technology & Engineering Education. Yet on the KSDE website, there is no mention of either programs. This invisibility is disconcerting and needs to be addressed. Having a large cohort will allows us, as professionals to have a stronger voice.
Secondly, as a group, we can share activities, lessons, successes which can help other teachers and students in the state. We have incredibly talented teachers in our state doing awesome things in the classroom. It is time to collaborate and improve education for all students. This organization is not restricted to just technology educators. If you want to support STEM education, Technology Education, Industrial Arts, or CTE, I invite you to please join.
Third, the cost for membership is unbelievable. It’s FREE! That’s right, to be a member, it is free. We want this organization to serve as a model for other organizations. We are planning on having a conference for our members to learn, similar to the old “Four-State Regional Technology Conference”. More information will be posted about this micro conference in the future. There will be a charge to attend the conference. The purpose is not to make money, just cover the cost of meals, website hosting, etc. This will be held at Pittsburg State University in March of 2019.
Here is the link to the KTEEA website so you can see it. It has a lot of information regarding the association. You can also join as a member online under the membership tab. This only takes a minute or two, of your time.
I sincerely hope you consider joining the organization. Thank you for all you do for students and your community, it is very much appreciated.
Best Regards,
Trevor Maiseroulle
