Barre Blast
June 1, 2016
Greetings from RLS!
I am very excited to share with you some fun news from 4th grade. This year, during their persuasive essay unit, several students wrote essays about school improvement projects they would like to start. One student worked to replace the classroom chairs with stability balls and another student is working to re-open and re-vitalize the Media Center. Supported by their teacher, Ms. Berner, they began to actively work on these projects during the WINN block. They are in the final stages of their projects and are now looking to you to support their efforts. Please see messages from them below:
Camryn Orsini, 4th grader: The idea of getting Stability Balls came from a child (me) writing a persuasive essay that she wanted Stability Balls. Our principal, Ms. V loved the idea and said to go for it. We started by coming up with a way to pay for the chairs. We found out about http://www.donorschoose.org/ and got enough chairs to fill an entire classroom! That was a great start, but we think other classrooms in the school would like to try them too!
In order to do this we need a fundraiser. We thought since Stability Balls are a different way to be healthy/active a 5K would be perfect. We are having the 5K on Sunday June 12, 2016 at 9:00 am. The race will be at Carter and Stevens Farm. This 5K could also benefit another RLS project to use the library. Please join us for the 5K. Maybe, afterwards you can grab some ice cream from Carter and Stevens. We hope to see you at this fun family event! Click here for more information and to sign up!

Riley Bassett, 4th grader: Have you ever imagined having a library nobody even uses! Well that’s RLS. I truly believe that we, the students, should be able to use the library upstairs! Not using the library is terrible because the books are going to waste, the students want more books to read, and the books that the library provides are great resources!!!
We are really hoping to have parent volunteers to run the library. Why should you volunteer? If you volunteer you will bring joy to kids’ faces. You can volunteer for as much or as little time as you can! We are hoping to get all classes to go to the library in 2-3 days. Stay tuned to sign up for this opportunity in the fall!
How did this idea happen? My class was writing persuasive essays. I wrote an essay on how we should use the library. I brought my idea to Ms. V. all the teachers liked my idea, I ordered books online for the library, and now all we need is you to volunteer to run the library or to run in our 5k so we can raise even more money for our project!
From, Fourth Grader, Riley Bassett
In closing, I hope you are following RLS on Facebook and/or Instagram so you can share in the wonder of what it means to be a member of this learning community! As always, if you have any questions or concerns or something to share, please do not hesitate to give me a call, send an email or stop by!
Regards,
Julie
2nd Annual Book Character Day
To end our reading adventure for this school year, and to launch summer reading excitement, K-2 will be participating in a "Book Character Day" again this year. Students and staff are encouraged to dress-up like their favorite book characters for the day. They will have the opportunity to do a "Book Talk" to share about their character and book. This will be a fun way to celebrate all our hard work, as well as to launch summer reading!
Congratulations 4th Grade!!!
