Monday Memo
Week of April 27th- May 1st
Greetings, CCE!
April 27th kicks off this coming week in the right direction! April 27th is known across our field of education as National Tell a Story Day! On this day, people all over the United States are encouraged to share a story. What a blessing it is to share a story with others! Not only is reading a good book lots of fun, but so is the art of sharing oral stories and history! Stories are important to all cultures around the world!
Growing up, I can still remember that in my grandparent's casita and in my own parent's home I hardly had any books to read. I was excited to have any library book with me and would often read the labels of cans and back of cereal boxes just to get my "word fix" growing up! (Truly humble beginnings....) I loved going to church because I got to read the book (and sing) all the words that I saw in English and Spanish. One of my favorite memories is having family gatherings where all of my Tias and Tios (aunts, uncles) would sit, enjoy good food, and chat about a variety of endless topics, many times the conversations came in the form of storytelling. Usually the stories that my dad told were the best ones to hear because they included so many experiences filled with mystery, unexplained happenings/events, and other topics that were always a favorite growing up. "La llorona" was one of my favorite spooky stories to listen to because I got to sit on my dad's lap if I was scared. Most stories told were about experiences that my parents had growing up as migrant workers and the hard work that they did to survive when they were children, too. What I most loved about the stories that my dad told were the rich details and voice that he used to tell the stories, all of which made them come alive and made his storytelling a work of art to my ears as I listened intently each time he shared them. Those stories have always stayed with me, even without having had books in my home growing up, what I always had were stories-oral stories that are important to helping create and value my identity today.
More than likely, you have your own family stories that have been shared and passed down to you. They are important and special for your own special reasons. If you haven't shared them lately, take the time this week to go the traditional route and share an oral story with someone in your family. If you can't think of one or have trouble sharing one, go ahead and pick up a good book and find a story that you love and share it with someone in your family. They will remember all those stories that you read (or told) for years to come. What a blessing it is to be able to tell a story!
Thank you, CCE, for being a big part of the story of my life!
Thank you, CCE, for being the best!
Stay Home, Stay Connected, Stay Informed, Stay Healthy & Be Well~

Linda
