Maillet's Kindergarten Newsletter
Week Of November 17th
Highlights From Last Week....
In Reader's Workshop, we continued to look at the picture AND the first letter of the word to see if it makes sense! Our reading stamina has plateaued at 15 minutes, which is still great! We continued to practice our other strategies as well: looking at the picture while we read, trading out books, practicing turning and talking.
In Writers Workshop, we learned how to label our pictures to help us write. We created a class book with our pictures.
Our literacy stations started this week! We have 6 rotations, similar to our math stations. The first station is the listening center, where the children listen to a story on CD and then write about the story. The second station is a Science station, where the children can use the science manipulatives. The third station is a book making station, where the children are using their strategies from Writer's Workshop to create their own books. The fourth station is a sight word station, where the children work with an adult to practice their words. The fifth station is a retelling station. This is where the student looks through the book and create puppets or other retelling creations to help retell the story. The final station is read to me. The student's read to me at their level and we work on different reading strategies that they need to work on to be an independent reader. Each child visits each station every day. The stations stay the same for a week and then the materials are switched out. The kids love this time of day and they do not even realize that it is a learning time!!! I could use some parent volunteers for this time of day. The time would be from 2:00 to 2:45. Please let me know if you are interested. Thank you in advance.
In Math, we continued our unit on shapes. We learned what the shapes are and what characteristics make them what shape. For instance, a triangle has three sides and three vertices.
In Phonics, we practiced letter sounds and learned the sight words "He" and "Can", please practice these words at home. Our letter of the week was "L".
In Science, we learned about simple machines. We focused on wheels and axles and levers.
In Social Studies, we honored a veteran during our Veteran's Day program.
In our Second Step program, we continued to learn about our own feelings.
We read several fall related books and used our strategies to retell some of the stories.
