Genocide PowerPoint

English II Research - Mrs. Piatkowski's Class

Overview

With a partner, you are to research information and create and present a PowerPoint on one of the recent genocides that has occurred in the world. White completing this project you will follow the MLA steps to researching:

1. Select a Topic

2. Create a Working Outline

3. Develop a Working Bibliography (40 points)

4. Take Notes on Major Points from Your Outline (60 points)

5. Create a Final Product with Works Cited Page (100 points)

1. Select a Topic

  • Cambodian Killing Fields
  • Darfur Conflict (Sudan)
  • Tibetan Occupation/Conflict
  • Rwandan Genocide
  • Bosnian Genocide
  • Jewish Holocaust
  • Armenian Genocide
  • Other (MUST BE APPROVED)

2. Create a Working Outline

Use the following for your outline:

I. Causes of the genocide (What led up to the genocide?)

II. Events of the genocide

III. Aftermath of the genocide

(Struggling with the correct format for your Working Outline? Check out this example by clicking here.)

3. Develop a Working Bibliography

You will need to use 4 different sources. At least 2 of your sources must be from print materials. This includes articles from EBSCO. You'll find links to print and web resources below.

Easybib, com is an easy way to develop a working bibliography. You could also create your own working bibliography in a word document or by writing it on a sheet of paper. However, you will have to create a works cited page later, so you might as well use this site now! Whatever you choose, make sure you are following proper MLA format!

4. Take Notes on Major Points From Your Outline

  • You will need at least 30 facts
  • Each source's list of facts should be on a separate sheet of paper
  • You must have at least 5 facts from each source

Print Resources

We've pulled several books that we think might help with your research. They are behind the circulation desk. Feel free to go back there and choose what you need. Please give the card in the back of the book to one of the media assistants when you take it though. When you are done, return it to them instead of putting it back on the shelf please!

We may not have found what you need. Click here to search for more books in the library.

Don't forget - Encyclopedias are a great print resource too!

If you still can't find what you need, you can search an online database for articles. (Because they were once printed instead of digital, they count as print resources!)

Visit the NC WiseOwl link below and follow these steps:

  • Choose High School Zone
  • Choose Social Studies on the left
  • Choose TOPICsearch
  • The password is wiseowl
  • Search for your topic

Reliable Website Sources

5. Create a Final Product with Works Cited Page

  • You must have at least 10 slides
  • You should include at least 20 facts from your research
  • You should include relevant but appropriate pictures
  • Pictures must be cited on your works cited page
  • You must turn in a hard copy of a works cited page

You'll then present your PowerPoint to the class. You should be organized, confident and knowledgeable.
