A Newsletter for Lynnhaven Elementary Families

March 2019

Message from the Principal

Dear Lynnhaven families,

Recently we had fun celebrating Digital Learning Day. Students could be found making slide shows, doing research, creating projects using the 3D printer and more! Our goal at Lynnhaven is to strike a balance between high and low technology practices as students need a variety of learning to be successful. Technology has opened the doors to a vast amount of information that offers our students a world of experiences Unfortunately, with all the positive experiences technology can bring, we also run into some negative.

Recently you may have heard of various challenges circulating the Internet, with the most recent being the Momo challenge. In this challenge, a ghost-like woman pops up on the screen to scare viewers by sharing threatening messages. If you haven't had the opportunity to talk with your child about Internet safety and reporting such messages as these to adults right away, this may be a great time to have these conversations. At Lynnhaven, we encourage digital safety and remind students to responsibly use technology. We also encourage students to immediately report any unusual or inappropriate content to an adult.

In addition to Internet safety, we are having more conversations about the use of personal devices. With an increase of cell phones and tablets, this is just a reminder that, unless students are using their personal devices for instructional use as permitted by the teacher, they are to keep their personal devices in their backpack. Having personal devices out in the classroom, cafeteria, P.E., hallway, or other areas of the building create a distraction and take away from the learning of the students. Thank you for your assistance with this.

We appreciate all you do every day to help us balance our ever changing world of technology!

Farewell Dr. Powell

Many of you have noticed that Dr. Powell has been out on leave. During her time away, she recently made a personal decision to step down as assistant principal. She will miss Lynnhaven Elementary students and parents dearly! In her leaving Lynnhaven she wants all the parents to know how much she appreciated the presence and involvement in our amazing community!

With her vacancy, the school division is working hard to fill the position. Currently, we are filling some days with interim retired administrators. Thank you to Ms. Sessoms and Ms. James who has been assisting at Lynnhaven the last several weeks! Once we have secured a new assistant principal, we will communicate this to our parents and community. Thank you all for your patience during our transition.

Grandparents' Day

Thank you to ALL the grandparents who came out on Valentine's Day to celebrate Grandparents' Day at Lynnhaven. It was a huge success! Thank you for your feedback and we look forward to making it even better next year!

Congratulations, Mrs. Corona!

We recently named Mrs. Corona our Lynnhaven Elementary Teacher Assistant of the Year! Mrs. Corona's compassion she shows our students every day is endless. She collaborates with her teacher and is always willing to lend an extra hand throughout the school. Mrs. Corona is simply the BEST!

Beginning this year, our school accreditation can be impacted by our overall attendance rates. We understand that we are coming out of the winter where sometimes more sickness occurs, and we appreciate parents who keep their children home while sick; however, other than sickness or a family emergency, we really need our students in school every day. If your child is out, please send in a note explaining the reason, so we can accurately code the attendance in the child's record. Thank you for your assistance!

Student Drop Off and Pick Up

Parents and guardians, we need your help for the safety of our students.

Drop Off:

We have designated our loop by the front entrance as the parent drop off. To ensure student safety, dropping students off in the parking lots is not permitted. We are lucky that the parent drop off line at Lynnhaven is generally short and moves quickly. We also ask that you keep a single file line with no passing. Sometimes students get out on the passenger side, so we want to keep all our Lions safe!

Pick Up:

In the afternoon, student pick up is done in the cafeteria. Students should not walk to the parking lot to be picked up, as movement in the parking lot can be unsafe for our students.

Thank you for keeping our students safe!

Congratulations, Mr. Andersen!

Every year, Lynnhaven Elementary selects an individual who has dedicated his or her time to volunteer in the school. This year, our Volunteer of the Year recipient is Mr. Andersen! Mr. Andersen volunteers each week in Ms. Umphlette's third grade class. In addition to his time that he gives each week, Mr. Andersen has also made additional contributions to Lynnhaven to support the students. We are so lucky to have Mr. Andersen at LES!

Congratulations, Mrs. Buse!

Mrs. Buse was recently surprised and recognized through the Great Dreams Need Great Teachers campaign where a parent wrote in about her impact on a student. Those of you fortunate to know Mrs. Buse will agree that every day she makes an indelible mark on the education of our students. Congratulations to Mrs. Buse!

Sustainability and Recycling

A BIG thank you to all our students and families who brought in items to recycle and reuse. Coming soon we will have boxes placed outside for our community to access bags to "scoop the poop" as dogs are walked on grounds after school hours. We also plan to use our bottles through projects. Thank you for making our Earth a better place because of your recycling efforts!
