Positive Office Referrals from the Month of August
Monthly Principals' Message for September
For our new parents, “POP” stands for Problem of Practice. It is a question that our staff develops through the use of classroom observations and perceived staff and student strengths and needs. The Problem of Practice drives our frequent instructional rounds in one another’s rooms and our professional development & coaching. In addition, our school and each grade level have come up with a few goals for this Problem of Practice that goal set around our multilingual students showing improvement in certain key areas of literacy and math data on classroom assessments, focus groups, and iReady testing too!
We are proud to unveil the following Problem of Practice for this 23-24 school year:
What high-leverage literacy practices and tiered supports can foster independence with an inquiry mindset for our multilingual students and other student subgroups in order to make significant progress throughout the school year?
The four main areas of high leverage literacy practices are in the areas of Phonics, Shared Reading, Writing, and English Language Supports.
See attached image for more details on the high leverage practices in each of these four areas if you so desire.
Announcements for the Week
**There will be no school on Monday, September 4th, in observance of the Labor Day Holiday.
1) Back to School Connections conferences continue this week through September 8th. Please be sure to sign-up for a time to attend via the Parent Square message sent out by your child's teacher two weeks ago. These connections are after-school slots since school will end every day at 12:50PM this entire week through Friday, September 8th. Also, our one evening session is this Tuesday, September 5th. Our goal is for every family to attend and share their needs, desires, questions, and hopes for this school year with their child's teacher.
2) Student Council for grades 3-5 has been announced as well as Grades 4-8 Soul Patrol! We are using this upcoming school week to further recruit for our Grades 6-8 Student Council, which will involve having leadership officer positions and a collaboration/connection with the leadership team at Monterey High.
3) We still have a very long list of parents who have not yet completed their annual registration first day packets online. Our office has sent a Parent Square to these families to get this taken care of as soon as possible (these are required documents). It should only take about 10-30 minutes to do.
MPUSD Online Registration. For those families who may need support in completing the online registration, Berenice Hernandez or Anahi Gamboa, Monte Vista attendance clerk and school secretary respectively, can address any questions at this time. 831-392-3890, bhernandez@mpusd.k12.ca.us or agamboa@mpusd.k12.ca.us.
4) Grades 7-8 Monterey Co-ed Soccer Teams game schedule should be released later this week and starting the week of September 18th. Most games will be on Mondays and Fridays either 4:30 or 5:30 with maybe 1 or 2 Saturday games. Stay tuned for play schedule soon.
5) We have a very important meeting for all grade 8 parents who have consented for their child to attend Ocean Pines in Cambria the last week of November. The meeting will take on Monday, September 11th, 6PM-6:30PM at the zoom link below. We will be discussing the schedule at the science school, lodging, transportation, packing needs, and additional fundraising needs in order to get us there. Hope to see you there!

6) Please see PTO fliers below for upcoming Monterey Bay FC Game (Monte Vista Night) and Chipotle Dining Out.
7) Please note that weekly reading logs can be turned in to your child's teacher after each weekend. Buttons and other prizes (for older students) will be given out as students hit higher tier levels of minutes read. We also have the Read-A-Thon coming end of September!
8) We have great news! The Pebble Beach Company Foundation has chosen us for a Campus Beautification Day (for funding and for staff volunteer support along with all of our families and staff who come out that day). More details to come, but it will be the morning of October 28th.
9) Now that beginning of the school year iReady reading diagnostic assessments (for grades 1-8) are completed, later this week, we will be sending out the assessment report to parents via Parent Square. This is a baseline for your child and their related growth and stretch goals for the school year in literacy and math.
