SCS Weekly Newsletter 1.3.23
Week of January 3, 2023
Principals' Message
Hello SCS Families and Caregivers,
Happy New Year! We hope that you have all been enjoying lots of time with loved ones this week, reflecting on the calendar year behind us, and looking forward to a bountiful 2023.
Turning the calendar page coincides with the onset of more active planning for the school year ahead (2023-2024).
- As you are likely aware, the CVSD budget development process is already in full swing. We encourage you to join the next board meeting on January 10th to learn about the revenue and tax implications of the proposed budget. (See below for more information.)
- CVSD Pre-K Registration Lottery has opened and is accepting applications. (See below for more information.)
- Our SCS Kindergarten registration process will be up-and-running soon as well.
- Here at SCS, we'll be starting to schedule tours for prospective families this spring (and we've started asking Student Ambassadors to help co-lead school tours), putting together an 8th-grade graduation committee, beginning the placement process, working on schedules for next year, and more!
While it's helpful to have an eye on the long term, we've still got plenty of exciting things to look forward to in the coming weeks as well. Here are a few highlights for the month of January;
- Ms. Celmer visited each classroom in December to share the story, The Energy Bus by Jon Gordon. The entire K-4 community co-created our "Energy Bus" display in the front lobby answering the question, "What does it mean to be the driver of your own bus?" We hope you'll stop by and check out their thoughtful work. Ms. Celmer will be revisiting classrooms in January to share the next story, One Word by Jon Gordon. Each K-4 student will design their personal 'license plate' with their own one-word goal for the second half of this school year. (Our PreK-4 faculty members select a one-word goal each fall for the year as well!)
- Our PreK-4 community has almost filled our first "S" container with cat coins in the main lobby! This means our students are being recognized for following our community commitments for expected behaviors of being safe, respectful, and responsible. We are preparing for our first PreK-4 community celebration, so we are ready as soon as the container is filled. So far, it looks like our 4th-grade student leadership team members will host a virtual celebration - filled with a community BINGO game and a dance party - with our music department playing the role of the "DJ" and our PE department teaching us the dance moves! Faculty and staff will have a "comfy" day and our students will deliver coffee and snacks on a cart to the adults in the building.
- Our Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion Coach, Lashawn Whitmore-Sells, is working with a group of students to perform a skit about Martin Luther King Jr. We are looking forward to this performance and sharing it with the whole school community later this month.
- The K-4 first semester ends on January 20th. Progress reports will be sent home on February 3rd (keep a lookout in backpacks or snail-mail).
- We are excited to announce our first 7th/8th grade dance of the year, to be held on Friday, January 20 from 7-9 pm. There will be dancing, snacks, and games, with music by TopHat Entertainment. As this is an in-person event focused on strengthening social ties via live interaction, phones will not be permitted. The Student Leadership Council is finalizing the details and will be in touch with 7/8 families soon.
- Finally, we are thrilled to welcome all SCS families back into the building for a winter open house on Thursday, January 26 from 5:30-7:00. It has been wonderful seeing so many families back in the building for conferences, volunteering, mentoring, and special presentations. We are looking forward to building on that momentum with a true community-wide event. We'll be keeping it light - this will be more of an opportunity to get reacquainted with the building and the many people that bring it to life than anything else. More details to come!
Here's to starting off 2023 on the right foot!

We try not to overuse this method of communication, but it is helpful for reminders and quick announcements, particularly when bus routes change. Don't miss out!
