Innovative Approach to Assessment

During the 2015-2016 school year, participants in Cycle 3 will have the exclusive opportunity to partner with Relay graduate school in a blended learning environment to develop a comprehensive understanding of assessment in the 21st century classroom. Participants will learn the power of formative assessment and providing meaningful feedback for our students to encourage a growth mindset.

Summer Training: Engaging Everybody

  • Teachers will identify opportunities for using several engagement techniques in concert

  • Teachers will practice executing narrated “Wait Time,” “Cold Call,” “Call and Response,” “Everybody Writes,” and Turn and Talk

  • Teachers will identify and communicate areas of strength and areas of growth in executing engagement techniques

Learning Focus Lessons

Research shows that the biggest difference between typical and exceptional schools is how and when teachers plan. Learning-Focuses lessons provide the framework for planning purposeful lessons that are engaging and challenging for all students. (LFS Lessons: Day 1)

Fall Focus: Designing and Evaluating Assessments

Assessment is a popular, and often controversial, topic in education. No matter what you believe politically about assessment of student learning, it is as critical aspect of the teaching cycle. Assessment allows us to make inferences about what our students know and what they are able to do. We can then use that assessment data to make decisions about how best to meet our students’ needs, but this process will only be effective if what we capture is reliable. In this module we will look at the characteristics of high-quality assessment items, learn how to procure assessment items, write our own assessment items, and intentionally construct a well-formatted assessment that is aligned to a standard.

Winter Focus: Checks for Understanding

In this module, you will examine the purpose for checking for understanding, study best practices for executing these techniques, practice the techniques with your peers, and employ them with your students. You will learn specific techniques for gathering real-time data about student learning so that you can adjust instruction on the fly to ensure students are learning every day.

Spring Focus: Feedback and Grading

We all have the same goal - high student achievement. You’ve already learned a lot about planning great lessons and tracking student progress. In this module, you will learn how to give effective written and oral feedback to students, so they are empowered to self-correct and motivated to improve. Through the use of Susan Brookhart’s How to Give Effective Feedback to Your Students, you will explore the characteristics of effective feedback and hear teachers and students share the impact of effective feedback on student achievement. Finally, you will spend time online and in-person exploring ways to help students make meaning of their grades and your feedback.
