South Brunswick School District is happy to continue our tradition of partnering with families by offering learning opportunities known as Parent Academies. Parent Academies aim to educate and inform parents and guardians on important topics, and our first for the year will be on keeping our children safe online. CNN VISITS SBHS
On Thursday, December 7th, Producer Natalia Osipova and Writer Alisha Ebrahimji from CNN visited the South Brunswick High School Library to report on an information literacy lesson that Librarian Mrs. Lisa Manganello taught to Mr. Jeff Johnson's 9th grade American Government class. 9th graders Urja Kandale, Akshara Satheesh, and Harrison Pekosz spoke beautifully about their lived experience as news consumers.
Building on their classwork, the students examined national political news and learned how to formulate search strategies that provide fair and balanced results. During the lesson, students looked for evidence of media bias in headlines and photographs. The class used lateral reading strategies to decide the quality of the news reported. Lessons like this are part of the new information literacy standard, signed into law by Governor Murphy in January 2023. The K-12 South Brunswick Librarians have shared their curriculum with other librarians around the state to help expand information literacy lessons to all New Jersey students.
As Mrs. Manganello shared "Given the large amount of information that our students need to sort through each day online, it is critical that we provide them with opportunities to learn how to evaluate the quality and bias of the materials that they uncover. We hope that lessons like this will do just that."
Watch the CNN10 News Report here. Ms. Ebrahimji's written report will appear in mid-January on CNN.com.
