JLo's Word
Dear Fatima Families:
What a blessing and an honor to call you my own! I am humbled to enter into this stewardship as your new principal. As I anxiously and eagerly start my new position, I wanted to write you all and introduce myself a little bit better.
As you know, my name is Jennifer Lopez, and I have been in education for 15 years. I have a Bachelor of Science degree in Secondary English Education and a Master of Science Degree in Educational Leadership with an emphasis in Literacy and Library Media. In my time as an educator, I have taught everything from PreK through college freshman courses. I have served as an online educator and tutor, team leader, department head, student council sponsor, academic team sponsor, and faculty administrative liaison. I have served as head of the curriculum committee for ELA, STAAR program coordinator, and RTI interventionist for struggling students. Several years ago, a retired superintendent working part-time for TEA (Texas Education Agency) was on my campus and noticed the growth and rigor I brought to my regular classroom. She asked me to visit several campuses in the Houston area and conduct professional development for the teachers to guide them in the process of balanced literacy and station. From those visits, Academic Literacy Learners was born. Academic Literary Learners, or ALL, is my personal educational business that I started in response to the demand for rigorous teacher training and student intervention. For several years through this company, I contracted with schools in and around Houston, delivering professional development for teachers and STAAR camp interventions for students. It was a great learning opportunity for me as an educator, leader and facilitator, and business entrepreneur. The skills I learned through this and my other educational endeavors have help paved the way for me to be your principal, and it is my passion and desire to bring that same rigor to our Fatima teachers and students.
Although education is my passion, there is so much more to who I am, so let me tell you more about me personally! I am very happily married to Ygnacio Lopez III. Between us we have five kids—four daughters ages 13, 10, 6, and 4, and one adorable little boy, almost 10 months old! We keep busy with this crew. Our 13-year-old, Faith, and our 10-year-old, Aubree, will be attending Fatima next fall. They will be in 7th and 5th grade. Additionally, our baby boy, Ygnacio Lopez IV (aka Dru) will be enrolled in our ECC program. Our littlest girls, Sophia and Ysabelle, are enrolled in Friendswood’s schools, but they will be with us at mass and family events, so you will definitely get to see them too!
In my spare time I love reading, shopping, swimming, going to the movies, and trying new eating establishments with my husband. I love sports, but be warned! We are from Dallas, and we are Cowboys, Mavericks, and Rangers fans to our core! Father Clint’s already warned me he is learning to love his enemies—I hope you can do the same! My favorite sport is basketball, and I played all through high school and two years on an intramural league in college. I am a Pinterest addict, chocoholic, and iPhone enthusiast. I never say no to chocolate, movie theatre popcorn, or Mexican food, and I definitely run off of a lot of coffee and a lot of Christian music (Sirius XM The Message!)
Most importantly and more than anything, I love Jesus with all my heart. I am humbled daily how He carries me. This past year was tremendously difficult. We lost our home and both our cars in Harvey. I was almost 8 month pregnant when we had to evacuate. A little over a month later, my stepmom, with whom I was extremely close, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly, leaving a tremendous hole in my family’s heart. Two weeks later, Dru entered our lives. Born on my paternal grandfather’s birthday, and the 4th of the Lopez men named after my husband’s paternal grandfather, Dru was a healing light for my family.
I’ve been asked why take on this new role and responsibility when I have already been through so many life changes this past year alone, and with all my heart I can say, because God led me to you all and Fatima. God never closes one door without opening another, and the doors He carefully closed and opened have placed me right at HOME- at Fatima. I am humbled and full of gratitude for each of you, and I cannot wait to start this journey with you and your family.
Blessings,
Mrs. Lopez
