St Bernadette's Primary School
NEWSLETTER | TERM 2 | WEEK 3 | 13 May 2022
Message from Geordie
Good afternoon, everyone,
It has been a really busy, productive and enjoyable week here at St Bernadette’s. This week, we facilitated planning sessions with students, teachers and the Advisory Council as we work towards creating a Master Plan for the physical environment of the school. A group of students from Year 4 – 6 participated with our Capital Development Consultant and Architect with a focus on what they see as the most important spaces in the school – what is working well and what is missing or could be improved. Places where they work, places where they play and places where they socialise and relax.
After school the whole staff engaged in discussions about how the physical environment of the school could best support our Strategic Plan under the four pillars of Catholic Identity, Education, Community and Stewardship. These were excellent discussions about everything from student safety when riding to school to breakout spaces for groupwork in classrooms and how best to support our Sustainability Programs. I would like to thank everyone involved for their input and I look forward to presenting draft designs to the Advisory Council and the community next semester.
Our Year 3 and Year 5 students have been participating in NAPLAN Testing this week and I am happy to report that the students are doing an excellent job and our new IT infrastructure and devices have made for a smooth process. I would like to thank all parents and teachers for preparing the students so well and reinforcing the fact that all we ask is that they do their best and have a go.
Many of you may be aware that last week we ran an evacuation exercise with the whole school. This is part of our new Incident Management Plan and went very well. Our staff knew their roles, the process went smoothly, and we had the entire school evacuated in less than 10 minutes from the time of first notification. As always, we review our safety procedures and these drills will continue on a regular basis here. Our students also did an excellent job, remaining calm and listening to instructions. This was no small feat considering we have a number of staff and students away on COVID protocols!
Over the last week we have had a few errors in our Live Calendar and in the information that has gone out via SeeSaw. With the changes due to COVID there has been a few errors and cross-overs and I apologise for this confusion. We are attempting to fit everything in for the students and we will do our best to rectify this as soon as possible. Lisa, Mel, Katherine and I will go through this with a fine toothcomb this week so that it is correct by next week’s newsletter!
Finally, can I please give a reminder to parents that disabled bays are for people with the appropriate permissions and that even when it rains, we are late or we just want to do a drop and go, they should not be used without the ACROD sign displayed. We have a number of parents and grandparents who rely on these bays and have not been able to use them as other people have parked there. As you can imagine with 450 students, our entry and exit gets busy in the morning and afternoon, however, we do our best to clear traffic as quickly as we can while keeping everyone safe. It is important that we are honest with each other when there is a problem and treat each other with kindness and respect at all times!
Good weekend for a big rug, red wine or hot chocolate and a movie – I hope you all stay safe, dry and warm!
