A Note from the Principal....
Greetings!
In last week’s note, I left you with a bit of a teaser about our English Language Arts (ELA) curriculum work. This week, I am excited to share some of what has been happening behind the scenes!
Knowing that the transition from ISTEP to ILEARN would undoubtedly present us with some new curricular demands from the state, we had secured a relationship with an educational consulting company that specializes in curriculum development. Beginning last summer, our teachers have been working with Dr. Jill Jay to review and update our curriculum maps, focusing specially on ELA and Mathematics. Dr. Jay has worked in Educational Administration as a Principal, a Superintendent, and, most recently, at Butler University as the Director of the EPPSP program (Experiential Program for Preparing School Principals). Upon retiring from Butler, Dr. Jay began working as an Educational Consultant and we were lucky enough to scoop her up! She has been a blessing to work with.
Along with Mrs. Borland, Mrs. Schaefer and I, Dr. Jay has provided support to our ELA department in using research driven practices to update our curriculum maps. We’ve spent a great deal of time digging deep in to performance data and state standards, while also providing professional development in instructional strategies to best support ELA instruction. With Dr. Jay’s support, our K-8 ELA teachers have enjoyed updating our curriculum to meet the state’s new expectations while also ensuring that the curriculum is engaging to students and consistent with our Catholic faith. Beginning in January, our math team will begin working with Dr. Jay to take a deeper dive in to their curriculum, as well.... but I’ll share more on math next week ;)
While a strong curriculum has always been a high priority for us at St. Luke Catholic School, we felt it was essential to be proactive in responding to the new ILEARN assessment to ensure that St. Luke is able to continue providing a top quality education for our students. Our teachers have done a phenomenal job and we have thoroughly enjoyed the expertise that Dr. Jay has brought to the team, as well!
Blessings,
~Mrs. Kissel

How do I notify the school my child will be absent?
Last year we began asking for absence notifications to be emailed to attendance@stluke.school. To report an absence, parents should email St. Luke School at attendance@stluke.school by 9:00am the day that the students are absent. Please copy the student’s homeroom teacher.
What do I do with that note the doctor gives me at the office?
Turn it in to the office!
Documentation provided to the office or an email from a parent or guardian to attendance@stluke.school must be received for time away from school to be excused.
If parents wish to pick up assignments their child is missing while sick or have it sent home with a sibling, they should include that request in the email to the teacher and attendance@stluke.school no later than 9am. Teachers will do their best to prepare copies of important assignments for students by 3pm to be available at dismissal.
