Popcorn Mania - EF 2nd Grade service learning project!!
Popcorn Mania culminates Eugene Field 2nd grade level expectations in math, science, social studies and communications art. We run it just like a small business. We will not only teach across the curriculum, we will also try to instill compassion in helping others by donating our profits to worthy causes. (Mexico-Audrain Animal Shelter, Camp Barnabas - a camp for people with special needs, and 2 $250.00 MHS Senior Scholarships) This is a very important part of 2nd grade, but it’s also very hard work. We have already started learning about expenses, working for needs and wants, as well as earning, spending and saving money and how supply and demand affects a business. As we discuss these topics, the children will be learning about how each of these issues will affect our 2nd grade business, Popcorn Mania.
Commerce Bank has been wonderful to help us with this project for the past 15 years. Ron Hopkins visits and explains the loan process and provides us a Promissory Note that each of us will sign. Our loan will be in the amount of $450 to be used to buy supplies for our business. On the average we bring in over $1,700! That is a LOT of $.50 bags of popcorn!
The children will have an opportunity to work each of the jobs in our business w/the exception of Book Keeper. They have filled out their “application,” and have taken a “Driver’s Test.” Upon passing their Driver’s Test, they will receive their “license” which will have to be worn when working as a Truck Driver. We will be selling our $.50 bags of popcorn during students’ lunch recesses.
The dates for this year’s POPCORN MANIA, is May 2-6.
So, put our dates on your calendar. Thank you for your support! We are guaranteed to have FUN! We will also take orders and deliver to other district buildings. Email one of us for assistance.

Transfers Request Process
Teachers: There is no longer a March 1st deadline to request a transfer to another building. Instead, all openings will be handled on a case-by-case basis.
Process: (Transfer requests are now done on TalentEd. No paperwork needs to be sent to the principal)
A. If an opening becomes available in your own building that you are interested in, you just need to talk to your principal about the process.
B. If an opening becomes available in a different building, then you need to fill out an internal application in TalentEd so that principal and Central Office know you have an interest.
There are no guarantees on transfer requests. Every situation is different and we will try to do what is best for kids in the long run.
Please contact Bethany Collins if you have questions on filling out an internal application. x2401.
